So, before we get into what I thought about this book, I want you to know that I given a digital version of this book for free from the author (Sarah J Stone) via Instafreebie.com in exchange for signing up to her newsletter.

Thanks for the freebie.

So what’s this book about?

Unbearable Love is a prequel novella (158 pages) to Ms Stone’s Shadow Claw series and is a paranormal adventure featuring shifters, witches and vampires. I’m unsure of where this story is set in – here or a new fantasy creation – or what time period.

If you’ve read any of my reviews before, you’ll know that I don’t post spoilers of any kind or reveal any plot twists in my book reviews, however as there is no official blurb for this story, I will just give you a brief outline.

Samuel is an immortal bear shifter and part vampire. He was a member of ‘The Council’, a now obsolete organisation set up to serve and protect the ‘others’ but still adheres to the vows he took. He is hundreds of years old and has been wandering in his bear form, since his wife and children died. One day he finds a cottage in the forest that has magic protection wrapped all around it and his interest in life blooms anew.

Rowena is a witch and has the additional gift of being a Seer, which is a very rare talent. She fled her village 3 years before, when they accused her of causing the deadly storms that her ability had allowed her to prepare for. She has been living alone in her cottage just trying to stay alive ever since.

Who wants Rowena dead and can Samuel protect her from her fate?

So, what did I like about it?

Sarah J Stone is a new-to-me author and I found her writing style very easy to read. I found myself almost immediately drawn into the story and was gripped throughout; the balance between world building and introducing our characters was seamless and the tale as a whole had a good pace. I thought that the balance of fighting, passion, humour and sadness was perfect which can be quite tricky to do in a book of this size.

I liked the fact that we got to know our main characters, Samuel and Rowena, personalities and their respective histories within the first couple of chapters; I felt a connection to them and liked them both very much. I found the subtle humour very much to my taste and I loved Rowena’s very real mix of intelligence and strength even though she had been through so much; I found myself engaged with her tale from the very beginning.

Unbearable Love had me on the edge of my seat, made me chuckle, caused a few tears to flow and kept me guessing. There is an explicit sex scene in this story but the way Ms Stone writes it, lending us the insights into both Samuel and Rowena’s hearts and the growth of their trust and feelings for each other, made it all the more heart-warming to read.

So, ummm, was there anything I disliked about it?

Nope, that’s why it gets 5 stars.

So, basically what I’m saying is…

I loved this novella! I think it has it all; mystery, action, humour and romance/passion. I would recommend this book to those who of you who love fantasy and adventure with a bit of romance thrown in, however, due to the explicit nature of a few scenes this is obviously intended for mature (18+) readers only.
