My Goodreads Rating: 5 Stars
So, before we get into what I thought about this book, I want you to know that I given a digital version of this book for free from the author (Victoria DeLuis) as part of her Advanced Reading Team in exchange for an honest review.
Thanks for the advanced copy.
So what’s this book about?
Hidden is the second book in a new series – Rune Witch Mysteries – an urban fantasy/ paranormal mystery that blends our modern ideas about witchcraft and magic with Welsh mythology. Hidden is a story (approx 140 pages) set in modern day Wales, UK, featuring our leading lady and rune witch, Summer Daniels, her long time boyfriend, Thomas Heart, who is human and a master in the martial art of Krav Magna, as well as a host of supernatural beings including house fairies, goblins and witches.
If you’ve read any of my reviews before, you’ll know that I don’t post spoilers of any kind or reveal any plot twists in my book reviews, so here’s what the official blurb has to say about the story:
One death, one pledge, one price to pay!
For Summer Daniels, there’s nothing better than a walk amongst the trees with the man she loves. But when she discovers the body of a young man in her forest, Summer soon finds her plans for the day cut short.
Determined to solve the case, Summer doesn’t hesitate to use her magic to find the killer. But how far can magic take her and how much is she willing to pay?
Will Summer be able to find the killers and bring them to justice? Or is she a pawn in a game she hasn’t begun to comprehend?
Fans of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Charmed will love this modern take on witchcraft and Welsh mythology.
I would like to take this opportunity to let you all know that the murder mystery aspect in each of the Rune Witch Mysteries books are concluded by the end of each one while the running background mystery of the “Daniel Family Curse” is left to continue. Although I am confident that Hidden can be read as a standalone story – Ms DeLuis tries to ensure her new readers aren’t lost by weaving any pertinent information into the tale – I do fear that you miss the nuances of knowing the existing characters, understanding the dynamics of relationships and the ongoing “family curse” plot line if you just jump in cold.

So, what did I like about it?
Over the past year, I have definitely become a Victoria DeLuis fan; I find her writing style very easy to read, I love the way she crafts her stories, the pace of her books, the intelligence of her plots and how they evolve.
I love the paranormal/urban fantasy world that she’s building in this series – a wonderful mix of fantasy and reality that ignites my interest. I thought the first chapter was fantastic; Ms DeLuis reminded us of our main characters, their relationship, the situation they’re in plus BAM! a murder mystery to solve!
I loved that I was practically holding my breath during the fight scenes in this book, scratching my head trying to solve the clues to the murder and work out the mystery aspects and I thought that the romance between Summer and Thomas was first-class. In fact, I’ve got to say I love that Sarah and Thomas are in a strong stable relationship and have been together for 8 years; their love, companionship, the banter they share and their loyalty to each other feels very real for me and adds a further dimension to this book.
My intellect enjoyed the twists and turns that Ms DeLuis took us on, I wasn’t ever sure how things were going to pan out, which clues related to the murder case and which to the ongoing “Daniels family curse” mystery but I couldn’t help turning the page to find out.
I must be honest and confess that there were a couple of scenes in this book that brought a lump to my throat and a tear to my eye but fear not, avid readers, this is no romantic weepy, there’s plenty of tension and action and, like most Brits, I do love a bit of banter and this story has that too.
So, ummm, was there anything I disliked about it?
Nope. I enjoyed every page. My only gripe was that it wasn’t longer, I was enjoying being on the trail with Summer and Thomas in their amazing world of magic, mystery and adventure and I was greedy for more! Lol!
So, basically what I’m saying is…
I really loved this tale. It had everything that I look for in a 5 star book; mystery, action, magic, humour and even a sprinkling of romance.
I would recommend this book to those who of you who love a mystery to solve, enjoy fantasy and adventure themes and don’t mind a bit of romance thrown in. There are no explicit or graphic violent or sexual scenes and so I feel comfortable recommending this book to anyone who likes reading paranormal mysteries.
