So what’s this book about?

Haunted by the King of Death is a paranormal romance novel (approx 277 pages) and is the eleventh book in Ms Heaton’s Eternal Mates series  – currently 15 books in the series. The Eternal Mates world is the same as Ms Heaton’s Vampire Erotic Theatre  series, and many of the characters found at the Vampire theatre make an appearance in this book. A multitude of different paranormal beings inhabit Ms Heaton’s world including; vampires, various species of fae such as elves, sirens, incubi and succubae, fallen angels as well as heavenly angels, demons, wraiths, phantoms, magic users such as witches, sorcerers and mages and, of course, shapeshifters of every species imaginable.

You don’t need to read any of the previous books in either the Eternal Mates series or Vampire Erotic Theatre series to enjoy Haunted by the King of Death as Ms Heaton weaves any relevant information into this story; however, I would like to point out that as with most books within a well established series, you may miss the nuances of experiencing past relationships and adventures when reading this book as a standalone story.

As with all of the books in this series, the romance aspect of the tale between Grave and Isla is concluded by the end of the book in Ms Heaton’s signature Happy Ever After style, so no nasty cliffhangers wondering will they, won’t they? Woop! Woop!

As my regular followers will know, I never post any spoilers or reveal plot twists in my reviews, so this is what the official blurb has to say about the story:

New York Times and USA Today Best-Selling Paranormal Romance Author Felicity Heaton presents:

Haunted by the King of Death (Eternal Mates Paranormal Romance Series Book 11)
A ruthless vampire warrior, Grave Van der Garde rules the mercenary Preux Chevaliers with an iron fist, determined to retain his hard-won position as one of the most powerful men in Hell and his reputation as the heartless King of Death. But beneath the cold façade beats the heart of a vampire torn between love and hate, ripped in two directions by a single ethereally beautiful female—his fated phantom mate.

Driven by her phantom instincts, Isla used a spell to make her solid in order to deceive the vampire who killed her sister’s demon mate and have revenge on him, condemning him with a single kiss to become a phantom too. But her plan took an unexpected turn when she fell in love with him, and with her new life, and the night she betrayed him shattered both of their hearts. Now, he lives to make her suffer through their connection, one that is fading with them as they begin to slip into the phantom world, and she must face the monster she created if she is to save herself and the vampire she still loves.

With a demon from Grave’s past determined to destroy him and everything he holds dear, and the clock ticking down to their inevitable doom, can he and Isla overcome their past and their pride to work together to secure the future they both desire deep in their hearts? Or will death finally catch up with the vampire king and his phantom mate?

So, what did I like about it?

I’m already a big fan of Ms Heaton’s writing style (I think I’ve mentioned that before. Lol!); it’s the way she creates a very believable paranormal world and then packs it with multifaceted characters with very real human foibles and weaves their stories around an engaging background arc that it just draws me in. Haunted by the King of Death did not let me down.

I enjoyed the dilemma aspect of this romance tale – following your heart to your fated mate or being led by your instincts for revenge – which Ms Heaton gives us here; both Grave and Isla feel the weight of their natures putting their instincts and duty before their own happiness.

Now I must admit, I was already a bit of a Grave Van der Garde fan – there are various scenes throughout the Eternal Mates series where this skilled predator appears – and I loved getting beneath that ruthless, stoic exterior at last. I loved meeting Grave’s family and seeing the characters from Vampirerotique Theatre once again (if you haven’t read this steamy erotic series of novellas, I suggest you do, you won’t regret it!) Isla is exactly what I want from a main female character; resilient, intelligent, funny and loyal! Fabulous!

I need to confess that one of the reasons why I love Ms Heaton’s books so much is the sex; she makes the most explicit sexual scenes very romantic (I think that it takes a very talented writer to accomplish this), these erotic interludes are balanced beautifully with heartfelt imagery and poignant internal dialogue from our main romantic pair.

Ms Heaton gives all her characters such depth of personality that they become real, I found myself getting caught up with the passion (who wouldn’t!) and the fighting but it’s the tender insights into Grave and Isla’s inner fears, their doubts and the emotional turmoil throughout this book that art-warming to read.

I loved the dizzyingly passionate love scenes, the edge-of-your-seat fight scenes, I was a blubbering mess during the tender/sad scenes and I chuckled out loud at the humour; I was gripped from the first page to the last and couldn’t stop reading!

…So, ummm, was there anything I disliked about it?

Absolutely nothing!

…So, basically what I’m saying is…

*wow* What an amazing paranormal romance story! It’s got everything that I’m looking for in a 5 star book; action, romance, humour, passion and plenty of well written erotic sex scenes. Couldn’t stop reading this book!

As with all of Ms Heaton’s books, due to the graphic violence and sexual content – it’s definitely steamy – I’d recommend this book to adults only who are fans of relationship and romance stories with oodles of fire and passion.
