So, before we get into what I thought about this book, I want you to know that I was lucky enough to be given a digital version of this book for free from the publisher (St Martin’s Press) after making a request via Netgalley.com in exchange for an honest review.

The publication date was 30th January 2018.

Thanks for the advanced reader copy.

…So what’s this book about?

Baby, I’m Howling For You is the first full novel (approx 304 pages) in Christine Warren’s new paranormal romance series – Alphaville although, I feel that it could also sit quite happily in the erotica genre due to the many sex scenes. The series was kicked off earlier this year with the novella Something To Howl About (read my review here). The books take place in Alpha, an American town of outcast shifters located in the Cascade Mountains in Washington State, affectionately called Alphaville by America’s paranormal community.

Alpha is the town where the outcasts went, the Others (non-humans) who had been shunned by their packs, prides, clans and family groups.”

If you’ve read any of my reviews before, you’ll know that I don’t post spoilers or reveal plot twists in my book reviews, so here’s what the official blurb has to say about the story:

WELCOME TO ALPHAVILLE, where the she-wolves and alpha-males play. . .for keeps.

Renny Landry is a wolf on the run. Pursued by a shapeshifting stalker and his slobbering pack of killer coyotes, she is forced to flee her job as a librarian to find sanctuary in the wooded hills of Alpha, Washington. A well-secluded safe space for troubled shifters, Alpha is Renny’s last hope. But the first person she meets there is a gorgeous alpha male with fiery eyes, fierce tattoos, and one ferocious appetite—for her…

Mick Fischer thought he left his past behind when he moved to Alpha. But fate has a way of biting him in the tail when a female wolf shows up on his property. Wounded, desperate—and disarmingly hot—Renny brings out the snarling, protective alpha beast in Mick like no other woman he’s known. Can these two haunted, hunted wolves manage to mate for life…even as the deadliest past demons howl at their heels?

…So, what did I like about it?

Christine Warren is still a new-ish author for me; I find her writing style easy to read, enjoy the pace of her plot lines and the eclectic mix of shifter species she includes.

I really enjoyed the first chapter, it left me breathless; a great opening to a story that was full of emotion and adrenaline. We meet our hero and heroine, find out a bit about their pasts and meet some of the other residents of Alphaville.

Although I didn’t like Mack until near the end of this story, Renny on the other hand is fabulous – an urban fantasy heroine through and through; she’s intelligent, resilient with a great sense of humour and she’s got gumption!

I’m going to own up, Baby, I’m Howling For You made me shed a tear or two, it had me biting my nails on the edge of my seat wondering how it would end, had me chuckling at the humour and got my blood pressure rising at the caveman sensibilities of our hero, Mack. Oh and yes because the passion between our two protagonists, Renny and Mack, ignites practically instantly, my cheeks turned pink a few times too!

…So, ummm, was there anything I disliked about it?

Ok, so I’ve got to be honest, there are a couple of things about this book that I struggled with.

Firstly, I have issues with our hero, Mack; he’s not my cup of tea. I didn’t “get” him, there’s not enough inner dialogue in this book that explains what’s actually going on in that thick alpha-male head of his and what his human side feels about Renny. In short, his actions frustrated me and it took the shine off. Why does everything have to be so extreme?!

And secondly, I missed the romance in this paranormal romance tale; our hero is an alpha of few words and rough passion and although there were quite a few hot and steamy scenes almost from the start, I felt that the “romance” or relationship building didn’t get started until well into the last quarter of the book. That’s too late for me, I couldn’t engage with the relationship aspect of this story.

…So, basically what I’m saying is…

I enjoyed this book; it was good. Baby, I’m Howling For You has proved to have many of the elements that I look for in an engaging paranormal romance; a gripping thriller, humour, a great leading lady, a good set of supporting characters and oodles of passion.

Due to the sexual content – it’s definitely steamy with a capital S – and violence, I’d recommend this book to adults who are fans of paranormal fated mate/insta-love stories with a bit of fire and passion.
