My Goodreads Rating: 3 Stars
So what’s this book about?
Magically Bound is the first book (approx 291 pages) in Rachel Medhurst’s latest series – Hunted Witch Agency (currently 3 books with book 4 to be published later this year) – an urban fantasy series set in London, England where only the government know of the existence of supernatural beings living in the city, including; witches and warlocks, of course, as well as vampires, shapeshifters and Dark Crawlers – a species who prey on humans by possessing their bodies, causing them to rot from the inside out – yuk!
If you’ve read any of my reviews before, you’ll know that I don’t post spoilers of any kind or reveal any plot twists in my book reviews, so here’s what the official blurb has to say about the story:
Witch, Warlock, Whatever…
My name’s Devon Jinx, and, yes, I’m half warlock, half witch. But I couldn’t care less about which kind of magic is better. All I want to do is keep my head down and get on with my new job as an investigator at the Hunted Witch Agency.
A recent, shall we say, mistake, has put me in place to inherit the leadership of the warlocks. Which means only one thing. I have a choice to make: Leave behind my life of witchery to become a warlock, or lose my warlock magic forever.
Complicating my choice is the fact that someone is trying to destroy the warlock coven. If I don’t stop them, the warlocks will be annihilated. The task seems impossible until Gerard Freshwater, a distractingly handsome witch, explodes into my life. He’s determined to make me see that being a witch isn’t just the best option, but the only option.
So, what did I like about it?
I have come across Rachel Medhurst before; I read her book Thunder Hunter within the Bad Magic box set and really loved it (read my review on Goodreads here). I found Magically Bound just as interesting and easy to read.
I liked our heroine, Devon Jinx, she is just what I look for in a lead female character, intelligent, witty and resilient plus she had oodles of gumption; I enjoyed how she dealt with the situations that were thrown in her path.
There are a couple of story arc running in this book which I like, firstly Devon’s half witch half warlock situation – how can you choose between the two halves of yourself? I loved this dilemma, the problems that her heritage causes and the soul searching she has to do. We also have the mystery of why witches are being kidnapped/murdered and who is organising it all; I thought this crime mystery aspect was intriguing and enjoyed how the team at the Hunted Witch Agency went about collecting and analyzing the evidence and then following the clues.
I enjoyed the way the relationships between Devon and the rest of the Hunted Witch Agency team developed. Magically Bound is told from Devon’s point of view so we can’t know for certain what the other team members think of her but their actions do give you a fairly good idea as the story progresses and I love the “family” feel. I look forward to seeing how her relationship with her Agency partner, Gerald develops in the next book.
So this story gripped me, I couldn’t stop turning the page to find out what happened next; Devon’s wit and the Agency team’s banter has made me chuckle, I found myself holding my breath during the fighting, blushing at the obvious lust crush Devon has on Mister-Mac-sexy and the emotions surrounding Devon’s revelations and the mystery of the missing/murdered witches has caused tears to flow down my cheeks.
So, ummm, was there anything I disliked about it?
This book had me hooked throughout from the first page to the last, the only reason it hasn’t rated higher than 3 stars is the cliffhanger ending! My main gripe is that the crime aspect was left unresolved and the book stopped in mid breathtaking scene after a huge showdown! Why?!? Shame, I was left so disappointed…
Having said that, I am emotionally invested in Devon so I will be continuing on her adventures, luckily, I had already purchased book 2 Magically Bonded so I won’t have to wait.
So, basically what I’m saying is…
Despite my 3 star rating, I really enjoyed this book. Apart from the cliffhanger ending, it has everything that I look for in an engaging paranormal/fantasy story; a great leading lady, a good set of supporting characters, a gripping storyline with multiple aspects, a good balance of humour, action and even a few moments of blossoming romance.
