Craved by her Cougar (Cougar Creek Mates #4) by Felicity Heaton
Read: 29th – 30th September 2018
My Goodreads Rating: 5 Stars
So, before we get into what I thought about this book, I want you to know that I was lucky enough to be given a digital version of this book for free from the author – Felicity Heaton – in exchange for an honest review.
Thanks for the advance reader copy.
So what’s this book about?
Craved by her Cougar is the fourth novella (approx 126 pages) in Ms Heaton’s newest paranormal romance series – Cougar Creek Mates – featuring four, sexy cougar shifter brothers; Rath, Cobalt, Storm and Flint. Cougar Creek Mates is set in the same world as Ms Heaton’s Vampire Erotic Theatre series and Eternal Mates series (both paranormal romance series that I can’t recommend enough); a world inhabited by a multitude of supernatural beings, including; shifters of every animal imaginable, elves, demons, vampires, fallen angels and witches, as well as the human covert organisation, Archangel. Their mandate is to find, study and kill all non-human species that pose a danger to mankind. Although many employees and supporters of the organisation believe anyone who is different poses a threat!
If you’ve read any of my reviews before, you’ll know that I don’t post spoilers or reveal plot twists in my book reviews, so here’s what the official blurb has to say about the story:
For the last twenty years, Cobalt has burned with a need of one female, a beautiful raven-haired cougar who captured his heart the moment he set eyes on her. His position as pride protector has been a blessing at past mating gatherings, keeping females away, but this time it feels like the worst of curses, because the female who has bewitched him so thoroughly is taking part for the first time and all he can do is watch as males battle for her.
As much as she hates the way her mother controls everything in her life, Ember is thankful for it as she constantly turns away suitors, unaware of the pain she’s sparing Ember from with every male she rejects. Every male who isn’t the gorgeous blond with darkness in his eyes and an easy smile she burns for with an intensity that scares her, awakens feelings in her that have her verging on doing something reckless. Damaged goods he might be, dangerous and unpredictable, but with every contest over her that pulls her closer to her doom, she grows more determined to follow her heart, no matter the consequences.
With every fight over the right to Ember, the tethers on Cobalt’s feelings twist and threaten to snap, a torment he cannot bear and one that has him willing to risk it all, because a single kiss would make even the harshest punishment worth it. He would die for one moment with her… his fated mate.
You don’t need to read any of the books in the Eternal Mates series, Vampire Erotic Theatre series or the previous Cougar Creek Mates books to enjoy Craved by her Cougar as Ms Heaton weaves any relevant information about the world and past adventures that the reader needs into this story. I can also confirm that the romance aspect of this tale is concluded to my satisfaction by the end of the book in Ms Heaton’s signature Happy Ever After style.
So, what did I like about it?
My regular followers will already know that Ms Heaton is one of my go-to authors for paranormal romance – I love her writing style; it’s the way she creates a very believable paranormal world and then fills it with complex, multifaceted characters and then inter-weaves their tales against a gripping adventure that draws me in and keeps me gripped. Craved by her Cougar is no exception.
As with all the brothers featured in this amazing series, Cobalt is certainly a complex and potentially volatile cougar shifter who also has a great capacity for love and loyalty which I certainly crave in my leading males. I liked that we finally got a chance to experience the cougars’ spring gathering from a female shifter’s point of view; the emotions, urges and uncontrollable instincts plaguing them for these four weeks. Ember has been on the peripheral throughout this series from the beginning and although I liked the glimpses we got of her personality, Ember definitely lived up to my expectations of a leading female character; she’s intelligent, resilient and has plenty of gumption. She also displayed a nice sense of humour, I swear, I fell in love with her more and actually chuckled out loud when she stated “ice cream and chocolate really were the best, and fruit could go fuck itself”.
As I think I’ve said before, one of the reasons why I love Ms Heaton’s books is how she makes the most explicit sex scenes romantic (I think it takes a very talented writer to accomplish this), the erotic liaisons in this novella are balanced with beautifully written imagery and poignant internal dialogue from the minds of Cobalt and Ember; the tender insights into their inner fears and emotional confusion throughout this book was heart-warming to read – perceived unrequited love, unfounded insecurities, feelings of low self-worth and social etiquette on both sides of our romance while both feeling the draw of being soul mates/ fated ones and the sexual desires that come with that mystical bond.
I would just like to say that I think Ms Heaton also writes amazing fight scenes; great prose that dumps you right in the middle of the action and a pace and tension that keeps you on the edge of your seat – I found myself actually holding my breath reading this story.
I loved that Craved by her Cougar managed to elicit so many emotions from me; tears, frustration, tension, whooping joy, titillation and heart-warming HEA moments. In short it was the purrr-fect way to end this paranormal shifter romance series, although, I hope we get to see these amazing characters cameo in future Eternal Mates books. *hint*hint* Ms Heaton.
So, ummm, was there anything I disliked about it?
OK, so here’s when I have to be completely honest, yes, I gave it 5 stars but I’ve been a little miffed about the Neanderthal attitudes of the cougar males in this series; they grate against my modern sensibilities. Having said that, I’ve come to understand that it’s all part of the animal aspect of this paranormal shifter pride and I decided that it’s not a big enough niggle to lose a star over as our leading males prove that it take more than that to win the hearts of their fated mates and those Neanderthal types in the pride seem to get their just deserts in the end.
So, basically what I’m saying is…
I really loved this paranormal romance novella. It’s got everything that I’m looking for in a great story; action, romance, passion, humour and enough titillation to keep me blushing on the bus. I devoured it!
As with all of Ms Heaton’s stories, due to the graphic violence and sexual content (it’s definitely bloody and steamy), I’d recommend this book to adults who are not offended by content of this nature who are fans of relationship and romance stories with oodles of fire and passion.
