Flora Reviews…

Chaos Rises (Chaos Rises #1) by Pippa DaCosta

Read: 30th September – 6th October 2018

Format: Kindle

My Goodreads Rating:  5 Stars

…So what’s this book about?

Chaos Rises is an urban fantasy novel featuring humans, demons and half-demons and is the first book in Pippa DaCosta’s trilogy Chaos Rises and is set in the same world as The Veil Series – which I devoured back in 2016 and absolutely loved (you can read my review here) – although, I don’t think you have to have read it to understand or enjoy Chaos Rises.

If you’ve read any of my reviews before, you’ll know that I don’t post spoilers or reveal plot twists in my book reviews, so here’s what the official blurb has to say about the story:

‘When the veil fell, any half-bloods not strong enough to withstand Chaos were torn apart. Some, like me and my brother, survived The Fall. Most did not.

That’s the good news. The bad news saw a whole other world try and devour ours. Demons, we call them. They came in countless waves. Destroying. Killing. Many people thought it was the end…

The Fall lasted a week.

Tens of thousands died.

Hell almost claimed our world as its own.

And then, from one day to the next, it was over. The veil came back, stronger than ever. I’m not sure if anyone knows how it was put right. But I do know it’s been six months since The Fall, me and my brother are on the run, and the leftover demons aren’t the most dangerous things in LA.

We are.’ ~ Gem

***

“They have no defence against chaos.” ~ Asmodeus, Ties That Bind, #5 The Veil Series.

Set in the same ‘world’ as the Veil Series, Chaos Rises, #1 The Chaos Series will feature some of the characters we love (and hate?), and also introduce some new faces.

The streets of LA are about to become a demon proving ground. Chaos will find a way. And as the Prince of Greed once said, “When chaos reigns, the veil falls.”

So, what did I like about it?

I bought Chaos Rises for my Kindle but also downloaded the Audible version because it was offered at a reduced rate. I alternated between reading the kindle version and listening to the story on Audible, which is becoming my favourite way to “read” a book.

I am already a fan of Ms DaCosta’s books; I find her writing style intelligent, engaging and very easy to read. I like how she paces her plots and the balance of tension, mystery and action she uses. As a narrated book, I was impressed with Hollie Jackson’s performance; loving the pace at which she read the story and her tonal adjustments for the dialogue. I would definitely buy books narrated by her in the future.

I liked the premise for the Chaos Rises and the Veil world; humans know about the existence of demons (but we don’t know the full truth of their power) some of which have chosen to live in our world (in a human look-a-like shell which demons refer to as their vessel) while the rest live in their realm the “Netherworld”, half-demons are considered abominations/scum by the full demons and are owned as pets or killed at birth. The Institute is a human organisation that studies demon-kind, sometimes in a demonic-brutal way so that the human-race has a means to fight demons. I appreciated the way that Ms DaCosta revealed the necessary world building without upsetting the pace of the tale.

I loved that our characters in this book were not your typical “good” or “evil”, making it hard to tell who Gem could really trust but then people are a myriad of greys, there is the potential of great kindness and great evil in us all which is what added a very believable dimension to Ms DaCosta’s characters for me.

Chaos Rises kept me guessing right to the last page, it made me smile, cry and had me, literally, on the edge of my seat. In short, I was gripped.

So, ummm, was there anything I disliked about it?

I did give this book a 5 star rating, so no, nothing niggled or grated on my nerves while reading it.

That’s not to say that I didn’t find the actions, reasoning and behaviour of some of our main characters frustrating at times but (in my opinion), that’s deliberate; it’s all part of the journey and character/story development that Ms DaCosta  makes us, the reader, experience to make the whole tale so involving – they are all Demon NOT human.

I would also just like to add, I know that Chaos Rises is the first book in the trilogy, and as such, I expected to have more questions than answers when I finished reading it but fear not, dear reader, there is no life or death cliffhanger at the end of this book! WooHoo!

So, basically what I’m saying is…

I really loved this book! It had everything that I look for in a 5 star book; it’s well written with a huge amount of twists & turns that kept me guessing throughout this action packed, emotional roller-coaster of an urban fantasy tale!
I loved Chaos Rises so much that I’ve just downloaded book 2 – Chaos Unleashed and book 3 – Chaos Falls and they are waiting patiently on my Kindle!

Due to the graphic violence and sexual/dark themes, I’d recommend Chaos Rises to adults who aren’t offended by content of this nature who are fans of adventures with gritty story-lines and lots of action.
