Flora Reviews…

Dark Angel (Her Angel: Bound Warriors #1) by Felicity Heaton

Read: 8th – 9th November 2018

Format: Kindle

My Goodreads Rating: 5 Stars

So what’s this book about?

Dark Angel is the first book (approx 141 pages) in Ms Heaton’s contemporary paranormal romance series Her Angel: Bound Warriors and is set in one of Europe’s most romantic cities, Paris.

This book is a revised, extremely extended and re-released version of the novella Her Dark Angel and is now a story with even more angel goodness (or wickedness if you prefer).

If you’ve read any of my reviews before, you’ll know that I don’t post spoilers of any kind or reveal any plot twists in my book reviews, so here’s what the official blurb has to say about the story:

Centuries in Hell have taken their toll on Apollyon. Tired of guarding the Devil, he longs to break free of the dark realm. The trouble is he can’t leave without permission. When he feels someone calling him, he seizes his chance for freedom, but what awaits him in the mortal realm is the last thing he expects – the beautiful woman he has watched over from Hell, a witch who casts a spell on him and awakens the darkest desires of his heart.

Serenity is shocked when a wickedly sensual black-winged angel shows up in her city of Paris claiming that she summoned him when she was only casting a simple vengeance spell. He’s no other than the angel of death! A very gorgeous, alluring angel of death who makes her feel she’s in danger of getting her heart broken all over again.

When the lethally handsome warrior offers to obey her and give her revenge, Serenity can’t resist the temptation, but can she resist the forbidden hungers the dark angel stirs in her?

No cliffhangers. No cheating. Just passionate paranormal romance books with a guaranteed happily forever after!

Discover the passionate, possessive and protective warriors of the Her Angel romance series from NYT best-selling paranormal romance author Felicity Heaton as they fight to shield the women they fall in love with from a dark world of demons, angels and vampires.

So, what did I like about it?

I’m already a big fan of Ms Heaton’s writing style (I think I might have mentioned that before. Lol!); it’s the way she creates a believable paranormal world and then packs it with multifaceted characters with very real human foibles and weaves their stories around an engaging background arc that just draws me in.

I need to confess that one of the reasons why I love Ms Heaton’s books so much is the sex; she makes the most explicit sexual scenes very romantic (I think it takes a very talented writer to accomplish this), the erotic interludes in this story are balanced beautifully with heartfelt imagery and poignant internal dialogue from our main romantic pair; it’s these tender insights into Apollyon and Serenity’s inner fears, their doubts and their emotional vulnerability that captivated my heart.

As always, this story was a page turner and I enjoyed reading it. I loved the build-up of sexual anticipation and I got caught up with their romantic shenanigans (who wouldn’t *blush*) but I also loved the edge-of-your-seat fight scenes. I shed a tear or two during the tender/sad scenes and I found myself chuckling out loud at the humour; Dark Angel had me gripped from the first page to the last and couldn’t stop reading!

So, ummm, was there anything I disliked about it?

Well, I obviously enjoyed the book as I rated it 5 stars, but I feel that I should mention a couple of things.

Firstly, my religious beliefs and faith meant that I found it tricky to relate to Serenity’s dilemma about “loving an Angel” and “going to Hell” for her feelings for Apollyon. The whole Angel fantasy romance is relatively new to me and not really something that I personally fantasize about – yet.

Secondly, this is the first book in a new series, and as such, you must expect a cliffhanger or two. However, for those of you like me who HATE huge cliff-hangers, rest assured, Ms Heaton doesn’t leave us hanging. Yes, there are background story arcs that are left unresolved but the paranormal romance aspect between our two main characters is happily concluded in Ms Heaton’s signature style.

So, basically what I’m saying is…

I really loved this paranormal romance tale. It had everything that I look for in a great read; it made me smile, cry and feel all warm & fuzzy inside with well written erotic thrills, heart pumping fight scenes and tons of romantic gestures.

As with all of Ms Heaton’s books, due to the graphic violence and sexual content – it’s definitely steamy – I would recommend this book to those adults who are not offended by content of this nature and enjoy reading stories about the battle between one’s duty and heart, tales of revenge, temptation and forbidden hungers; it’s a must for those of us who adore tales about soul saving love with oodles of fire and passion.
