Quote from Unbroken

It’s amazing to meet someone, fall in love and plan to spend the rest of your life with them, but what happens when they are ripped away from you and it feels as though your soul has been shredded.

My Overall Rating: 5/5

Plot: 5/5 – Flow: 5/5 – Character Development: 5/5 – World Building: 4/5

So what’s this book about?

Unbroken is the fourth and final book in Ms DeLuis’ Rune Witch Mysteries  series; a cross between urban fantasy and cozy paranormal mystery that blends our modern ideas about witchcraft and magic with Welsh mythology. Unbroken is a story (approx 133 pages) set in modern day Wales, UK, featuring our leading lady and rune witch, Summer Daniels, her long time boyfriend and now fiancé, Thomas Heart, who is human and a master in the martial art of Krav Magna, as well as a host of supernatural beings including fairies, dragons and witches.

If you’ve read any of my reviews before, you’ll know that I don’t post spoilers or reveal plot twists in my book reviews, so here’s what the official blurb has to say about the story:

The Tylwyth Teg took someone from me. I want him back.

When Thomas was taken from me, I wanted to burn the world. To rip it from its orbit and send it crashing into the sun. I’d been broken. But no more.

I’m Summer Daniels. Friend to few. Foe to many. And one angry witch…

… I’m coming for what is mine.

If I’m honest, I don’t think that Unbroken can be read as a standalone story. Ms DeLuis includes the basic information a new reader may need about the existing characters and previous adventures, however, I fear that you’d miss all the nuances that come with knowing them and understanding the dynamics of the relationships as well as miss the small clues of connectivity that have been gleamed from the past adventures if you just jump in cold.

So, what did I like about it?

I am already fan of Victoria DeLuis books; I find her writing style very easy to read and I love the way she crafts her stories. I like the pace and intelligence of her plots, how she evolves her characters and how the various relationships develop – friend and foe.

I love the paranormal/urban fantasy world that Ms DeLuis has built in this series – drawing on the wealth of Welsh folklore that’s right on her doorstep, it’s a wonderful mix of fantasy and reality that ignites my interest.

The previous book – Forgotten – ended on a cliffhanger; Thomas had been taken! Oh how I’d cried! This first chapter starts where Forgotten left off, with Summer Daniels searching for a way to save Thomas. I adore the fact that they are so in love; their relationship is strong, stable and they are still very much aroused by each other. Their companionship, the banter they share and their loyalty to each other is wonderful to read and adds a further dimension to this book. I’ve enjoyed that the series began with their long-term relationship already solid and just waiting to take that next step into that permanent commitment – marriage. It’s a unique situation in the stories I read and it’s one of the aspects of the Rune Witch Mysteries that kept drawing me back.

As with the previous books, I loved that I was holding my breath during the many fight scenes, it was tense but in a good way, an interesting mix of physical and magical skills.

My intellect enjoyed the twists and turns that Ms DeLuis took us on. I was completely blind-sided a couple of times, I wasn’t ever sure how things were going to pan out but I couldn’t help turning the pages to find out.

I must be honest and confess that there were a few scenes in this book that brought a lump to my throat and a couple that actually had me blubbering like a baby but fear not, avid readers, this is no romantic weepy, there’s plenty of tension and action as well as perfectly timed banter.

So, ummm, was there anything I disliked about it?

I gave Unbroken 5 stars because I enjoyed every single page – even the ones that made me cry. 😉

I don’t think that it can be read as a standalone story as this book is the completion of the series. Ms DeLuis includes the basic information about the existing characters and previous adventures, however, I don’t think that new readers can just jump in; this is a four book series that builds to this final showdown between Summer and her fae uncle, Dureth.”

So, basically what I’m saying is…

I really loved this book. It had everything that I look for in a 5 star story; mystery, action, magic, humour and even a sprinkling of romance.

I would recommend this book to those who of you who love a mystery to solve, enjoy fantasy and adventure themes and don’t mind a bit of romance thrown in. There are no explicit or graphic violent or sexual scenes and so I feel comfortable recommending this book to anyone who likes reading paranormal mysteries.
