Dark Alpha’s Lover (Reaper #4) by Donna Grant

Read: 25th – 27th May 2019

Publication Date: 18th April 2017

Quote from Dark Alpha’s Lover

“That was the day her [Cat’s] life changed. At eight years old, she’d felt the weight of the world drop on her shoulders. The burden had nearly brought her to her knees. And it lingered, growing heavier with each passing year.

Yet she remained standing beneath it all.”

My Overall Rating: 5/5

Plot: 5/5 – Flow: 5/5 – Character Development: 5/5 – World Building: 5/5

Dark Alpha’s Lover is a paranormal romance novel (approx. 183 pages) and the fourth tale in Donna Grant’s Reaper series – a spin off within her Dark World universe centring around Death (Erith) and her group of Reapers. Death is the judge and jury of the Fae world and her Reapers are the ones who carry out the executions when she’s passed sentence on those most deserving of Fae. The Reapers are mixed bunch of seven Light and Dark Fae – Baylon, Kyran, Talin, Fintan, Eoghan and their leader Cael – and each book follows the romance of one of these impressive males and the woman who brings him to his knees and claims his heart.

Ms Grant’s Dark World Universe includes the Dark King series, Dark Warrior series and Dark Sword series and is populated by many supernatural and mythological beings including; dark and light fae, Death and her Fae Reapers (who feature in this series), dragon shifters and magic welding druids who consist of the mies who use light magic, dark magic users the droughs and the druid Warriors who have the powers of the old gods. These various species can be found inhabiting our world as well as in their own magical realms hidden from the knowledge of humans.

If you’ve read any of my reviews before, you’ll know I write about the way a story is told and that I don’t post spoilers or reveal plot twists, so here’s what the official blurb has to say about the story:

There is no escaping a Reaper. I am an elite assassin, part of a brotherhood that only answers to Death. And when Death says your time is up, I am coming for you…

I answer to no one but Death. I am impenetrable, impervious, immortal. I exist to do Death’s bidding and no one–not Reaper nor human nor Fae–can stand in my way. Except for the bewitching half-Fae, Catriona. She swears the magic in her family passed her by, but I know better. This woman is strong. This woman is powerful. And when her abilities surge forth, no one will be able to stop the Dark Fae from coming for her. Except for me. I want to keep her close. I want to keep her safe. I want lose myself to her, again and again…

Dark Alpha’s Lover makes references to characters and adventures from the wider Dark Universe but Ms Grant ensures her newer readers aren’t completely lost by weaving pertinent information into this story.

I have already read a handful of books within the latter stages of Ms Grant’s Dark universe including all of the amazing eBooks in this series.

I’m big fan of Ms Grant’s paranormal romance books. I find her writing style easy to read and I love the way she paces the development of the plot. The fantasy world that she has created is complex but believable and her characters are engaging. What I like is that none of the characters she creates are stereotypically evil or good but have the multilayered depth of personality that are present in real life; they’re complex souls with a multifaceted mix of positive and negative traits.

I downloaded the narration of this book too as I enjoy listening to a story as I read along. I liked Victoria McGloven’s performance and the slight tonal variations that she used for the different characters’ dialogue. Although her style is growing on me, I still wish that she’d created a wider variety of voices for the many characters and varied her pace during the different types of scene as I’ve experience in other narrations.

I think that Fintan is my favourite Reaper so far; his seemingly emotionless façade as an assassin and his deadly efficiency contradicts the fact that he’d fight with his last breath to defend his fellow Reapers. Pure white hair and only a ring of his original red outlining his eyes showing everyone the sheer number of lives he’s taken in his life – Fintan is truly the ultimate killer. But oh, his history of betrayals, his story… *swoon* he’s just the broken warrior I fall for.

But it’s not just my mega crush on Fintan, as I’ve said before, I need the lead female character to be intelligent, resilient and be able to look after herself to really connect to a story. Catriona (Cat) Hayes is perfect; she’s a woman with plenty of gumption and is a worthy addition to the group! We find out a bit more about our arch villain, Bran, too in this book and his tragic story broke my heart. Although, his actions since are those of a psychopath blinded by his need for revenge.

Ms Grant loves to have the romantic aspect between her lead couple concluded by the end of each book; I love Happy Ever After endings too Woop! Woop! but this book isn’t just about the romance between Fintan and Cat, there are various aspects weaved together in this book, we meet various characters from the main Dark Kings series and Ms Grant uses this story to progress others in her Dark World; I enjoyed being a fly on so many walls.

Dark Alpha’s Lover had me gripped from the start and was emotionally draining; I blubbered like a baby, growled in frustration, cried out in shock and my adrenaline pumped, however, as a romance there was also enough tender scenes and romantic gestures to warm my old heart and plenty of sexual anticipation and titillating passion to send tingles in all the right places too. This book captivated me; I had to keep going, reading just one more page!

I really enjoyed Dark Alpha’s Lover and couldn’t stop reading it which is why I rated it 5 stars.

I would just like to take this opportunity to remind you that this book is the fourth book in a spin-off series. Dark Alpha’s Lover could be read as a standalone romance as that aspect of this tale is resolved in Ms Grant’s signature HEA style, however, the background story revolving around the threat posed by Bran, the ex-Reaper and current nemesis, has only escalated within these pages and is far from concluded.

I really loved this novel; it was a story that kept me reading from the beginning to end. Dark Alpha’s Lover has everything that I look for in a great book; adventure, mystery, action, fantastic characters, some humour, romance and a fair amount of passion.

Due to the graphic nature of the violence and sex scenes, I would only recommend this book to adults who are not offended by this sort of content. If you enjoy soul saving paranormal romance tales with a multi-layered backstory that keeps you turning the pages starring broken alpha heroes and heroines with plenty of gumption, lots of action alongside beautiful romance, oh and enough titillation to make you blush on the bus, then this eBook is definitely one for you.
