Quote from Avenged by an Angel

I really need to give you a better name,” she muttered. “You’re tall dark, and were a little pompous… but TeeDeePee sounds stupid.”

EffSee for Fourth Commander didn’t sound much better.

Thunder rumbled in the distance and she glanced in the direction it had come from. Black clouds filled the horizon, slowly rolling towards her. For a moment, she had feared he had heard her and had come to argue with her again about his name.

For a moment, she had hoped he was back.”

My Overall Rating: 5/5

Plot: 5/5 – Flow: 4/5 – Character Development: 5/5 – World Building: 4/5

Avenged by an Angel is an adult paranormal romance novel (approx 371 pages) and is the latest book in Ms Heaton’s Eternal Mates series. The series is set in the same world as her London Vampires  series and a multitude of different paranormal beings inhabit Ms Heaton’s world including; vampires, various species of fae such as elves, sirens, incubi and succubae, fallen angels as well as heavenly angels, demons, wraiths, phantoms, magic users such as witches, sorcerers and mages and, of course, shapeshifters of every species imaginable.

If you’ve read any of my reviews before, you’ll know that I write about how the story was told rather than the plot itself, which means that my reviews don’t contain spoilers of any kind or reveal any plot twists, so here’s what the official blurb has to say about the story:

Duty should mean everything to the Fourth Commander of the Echelon angels. It did before he met her. Now, the only demon he wants to slay is the one that haunts the enchanting mortal huntress, and the temptation to hunt him in Hell, a realm that might kill him, is becoming impossible to resist.

Held captive by a dragon shifter in Hell, Emelia survived a torment that changed her in ways she hates. She wants her strength back. Her life back. To do that, she needs closure. To get that, she might have to trust not only a man again, but an immortal.

But when the price of vengeance is the soul of the angel bringing her back to life, will Emelia be willing to pay it?

So, before we get into what I thought about this book, I want you to know that I was given an unedited digital version of this book for free from the author (Felicity Heaton) in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my review; these are my words, I’m giving you my honest opinion here.

I’m already a BIG fan of Ms Heaton’s writing style (I think I’ve mentioned that before. Lol!); it’s the way she creates a very believable paranormal world and then packs it with multifaceted characters with very real human foibles and weaves their stories around an engaging background arc that just draws me in. Avenged by an Angel did not let me down.

I enjoyed the dilemma aspect of this romance talefollowing your heart to the one you love and abandoning your duty or honouring those you have pledged allegiance; both The Fourth Commander and Emelia feel the weight of their positions and the hard choices that have to be made.

I enjoy a story more when the lead female character is intelligent, resilient and can look after herself; I wasn’t disappointed here. Emelia is a resilient woman, although she doubted her own strength throughout this book. I loved learning about her life and getting to know her in this story. I love that none of the characters in this series are flat 2-dimensional creations; they all feel very real even though most are mythical species.

I need to confess that one of the reasons why I love Ms Heaton’s books so much is the sex; she makes the most explicit sexual scenes very romantic. I think that it takes a very talented writer to accomplish this. These erotic interludes are balanced beautifully with heartfelt, poignant internal dialogue from our main romantic pair; it’s these tender insights into The Fourth Commander and Emelia’s inner fears, their doubts and the emotional turmoil throughout this book that captivated my heart.

There was so much about this story I loved; the build-up of the sexual relationship, the romantic gestures and the passion between Emelia and The Fourth Commander, the edge-of-your-seat fight scenes, the tender/sad scenes and the sprinkling of humour. I was gripped from the first page to the last and couldn’t stop reading!

I have rated this book 5 stars, which means that there wasn’t anything in this story that took the shine off my enjoyment enough to lose a star over.

As with all of the books in this series, the romance aspect between The Fourth Commander and Emelia is concluded by the end of the book in Ms Heaton’s signature Happy Ever After style, so no nasty cliffhangers wondering will they, won’t they? Woop! Woop!

Having said that, there are story threads in this book that tie in with the series as a whole; you don’t need to read any of the previous books in either the Eternal Mates series or London Vampires series as Ms Heaton weaves any relevant information into this story. However, I would like to say that as with most books within a well established series, reading Avenged by an Angel as a standalone story may mean that you might lack that deeper connection to the supporting characters and the innate understanding and implications of those series story threads jumping straight in.

I really loved this paranormal romance story! It’s got everything that I look for in a great book; action, romance, humour, passion and well written erotic sex scenes. I couldn’t put this book down!

As with all of Ms Heaton’s books, due to the graphic violence and explicit sexual content, I’d recommend this book to adults who are not offended by content of this nature who are fans of relationship and romance stories with oodles of fire and passion.
