Quote from Queen of Vampire Hearts

“When he grew bored of sexual delights in the past, though admittedly never had it grown to this extent, he’d rallied his vampires into a war.

Around and around he went, war to sex from sex to war, over and over again for three thousand years. He was desperate to forget the lack he felt, the loneliness that pursued him tirelessly.

No, don’t go there. Think about war, about battle, forget the yawning emptiness inside.”

My Overall Rating: 5/5

Plot: 5/5 – Flow: 4/5 – Character Development: 4/5 – World Building: 5/5

Queen of Vampire Hearts is the début novel (approx 381 pages) that kicks off Ms Rose’s Fated Loves series. This adult paranormal romance is set in our modern world where various supernatural species and subspecies – demons, fae, witches, werewolves (Lycans) and vampires amongst others – can be found inhabiting our world as well as in their own magical realms hidden from the knowledge of humans.

If you’ve read any of my reviews before, you’ll know that I write about how the story was told rather than the plot itself, which means that my reviews don’t contain spoilers of any kind or reveal any plot twists, so here’s what the official blurb has to say about the story:

A Woman Fleeing Persecution…
Phoebe Atreus is a witch on the run, her carefully crafted rules have kept her alive for the last decade, each one a product of a hard learned lesson. Rule Number One? Trust No One. She’s been betrayed one time too many to put her faith in anyone else’s hands. Even if the legendary vampire king might be the one person who could protect her from the enemies always one step behind.

A Man Whose Abandonment Issues Span Thousands of Years…
Lucien Silvano has been king of the vampires for the last three thousand years, he’s fought in wars that have been reduced to legend, rescued damsels in distress, seduced said damsels, and moved on. Immortal life has become a never-ending battle against boredom. Nothing has truly stirred his interest in years, except her. She’s the exception to every rule, his Queen, his mate, the one-person Fate declared to be his. The problem? She wants nothing to do with him.

What could possibly go wrong?
Phoebe refuses to share her past with Lucien, pushing him away at every opportunity, yet unable to resist the chemistry that explodes whenever they are together. Forced back to his castle in Romania to live as his Queen, she starts to forget the rules that have kept her safe… until the secrets Lucien has been hiding remind her why she created them in the first place.

So, before we get into what I thought about this book, I want you to know that I was given an unedited digital version of this book for free from the author (Jeanette Rose) after making a request via Netgally.com in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my review; these are my words, I’m giving you my honest opinion here.

As a début author, I was very impressed with Ms Rose’s writing style; it felt articulate, rich but was very easy to read. I thought that the story itself was intelligent and felt well planned out. I enjoyed her prose; the way she weaved realistic human behaviours into her new paranormal fantasy world making it feel believable.

Ms Rose allows both her main characters – Phoebe and Lucien – to lead the reader with their own chapters/sections, giving us a chance to read their inner dialogue; I really like this because it helped me to gain a further depth of understanding, empathy and connection to both of them.

If you’ve read my reviews before, you’ll know that I enjoy a story more when the lead female character is intelligent, resilient, self-reliant and has a good sense of humour. Phoebe Atreus turned out to be everything that I look for in a lead female character; tough, witty, able to hold her own but with a good moral compass and a kind and loyal heart. I enjoyed watching her grow and develop through this book and look forward to seeing her evolve in subsequent books.

In fact, I loved the fact that all of the characters in this book have been written with multifaceted personalities, having their own set of foibles and emotional baggage, there are no stereotypical good or evil characters here which makes them all feel real and I look forward to becoming better acquainted with the rest of the supporting cast in the subsequent books.

Queen of Vampire Hearts sits perfectly within the Paranormal Romance genre because it’s the romance between Lucien and Phoebe that takes centre stage throughout the plot. However, there other aspects to the plot; prophecies, betrayals, mystery and adventure and I enjoyed every one of the twists and turns that Ms Rose took us on.

I loved the fact that I experienced a myriad of emotions while reading Queen of Vampire Hearts; the banter and humour made me chuckle, I shed a tear or two during the more emotional revelations, the fighting and action scenes fed my adrenalin fix, the tension and horror had me on the edge of my seat, the romance warmed my heart and the passion titillated my tummy and put fire in my blood. In other words, I was gripped and couldn’t stop reading.

I really loved this book, as you can tell by my rating.

As the first book in a new series, there was the obligatory world building and character introductions, however, I never felt that this slowed down the pace of the story. Rest assured, dear readers, there are no information dumps and no perilous life-or-death cliffhanger ending in this book. Having said that, there are plot threads that are left to be explored and concluded in subsequent books as expected from a first in series book.

I really enjoyed this novel; it was a tale that kept me reading from start to finish – I was hooked! Queen of Vampire Hearts has everything that I look for in a good story; adventure, mystery, action, great characters, some humour, romance and oodles of passion.

Due to some of the more adult themes and explicit sex and violent scenes contained in this book, I would only recommend it to adults who are not offended by this sort of content. If you enjoy paranormal romance tales with a multi-layered back-story that keeps you turning the pages from start to finish with alpha heroes and heroines with plenty of gumption, romance, oh and enough titillation to make you blush on the bus, then this novel is definitely one for you.

Long time lover of Paranormal Romance, decided when I couldn’t find a book that I was interested online to write my own! It spiralled from there.

My first book, Queen of Vampire Hearts, will be released on August 17, and the sequel, On A Fury’s Wings, will likely be in early November, I have outlined for at least 14 books in the series, Fated Loves, with each novel functioning as a standalone installment.

I have a degree in Classical Civilizations from Tulane University. Missing New Orleans with a vengeance!
