Featured Image 1200x675 - Amazing Narrators - My A to Z of Recommended Tale-Spinners (1)

Hello, fellow audiobook junkies. I’d like to take a moment and shine my spotlight on some super storytellers!

We all love great stories: my blog is full of them! However, rather than the authors of such tales, I’d like to talk about the amazing narrators that read them to us.

Honestly, my relationship with audio hasn’t been smooth sailing, as my post about my growing love for audiobooks confirms. However, the format has burrowed into my heart and is now my preferred format. As I slowly made the switch from ebooks to audiobooks, I’ve learnt that a narrator can make or break my enjoyment of a story. Thankfully, there are some super storytellers out there. Therefore, consider this their space. These are the amazing and talented narrators that I’ve heard and would recommend you listen to.

As you can see, I’ve listed them alphabetically by surname in a handy A to Z of recommended tale-spinners. To find out more about them, click on their social media links. I know, you love me too 😉

Caitlin Davies

About Caitlin Davies

Narrator - Caitlin Davies

Caitlin Davies is a voiceover artist and award-winning audiobook narrator. She is also a freelance audiobook director with Macmillan Audio and Hachette Audio.

Caitlin has voiced characters for the video game Magic: The Gathering Arena and is the voice of a number of popular audiobook series including House of Night, Penryn & the End of Days, Dragon Blood, The Warrior Chronicles, and The Talon Saga.

Caitlin’s narration of The Warrior Chronicles opened up the epic fantasy genre to me. I feel that she personified the protagonist; bringing Shanti to life in her narration of this series. The pace at which Caitlin reads the narrative is great, adding just the right amount of emotion to her performance to transport me into each scene. The voices she created for each character (especially the Honour Guard in The Warrior Chronicles) added another level of credibility to the dialogue.

Cris Dukehart

About Cris Dukehart

Narrator - Cris Dukehart

An award-winning storyteller and a graduate of Johns Hopkins University, Cris Dukehart has narrated over 300 books in a plethora of genres, from romance, science fiction, and young adult to children's literature and autobiography.

Her voice, with an endearing mix of sweetness and pluck, can be heard around the world and across the Web in commercials, e-learning projects, and corporate narrations.

An Audie Nominee and Earphones Award Winner, she lives with her daughter and a hairy white monster dog, dividing her time between a little Post-it Note Cottage in Pennsylvania and a mountaintop house in the Caribbean.

I like the pace at which Cris reads stories and enjoy the slight tonal adjustment she makes for the characters’ dialogue. I never feel confused about who is speaking. Cris definitely captured Tori’s personality in The Guild Codex: Spellbound series.

Tavia Gilbert

About Tavia Gilbert

Narrator - Tavia Gilbert

Tavia Gilbert is a trusted and sought-after actress for work across every genre, from children’s and YA, to literary fiction, non-fiction, and genre fiction. She has a particular love for work that focuses on social justice, so she has been proud to voice work such as Eleanor Roosevelt’s autobiography, lyrical remembrances of a child’s perspective of the Holocaust, Yellow Star, or a young Muslim immigrant’s perspective of September 11th, The Day of the Pelican, and Let Me Stand Alone, the extraordinary collection of writing by Rachel Corrie.

I found Tavia through The Southern Ghost Hunter Mysteries. The pace at which she reads, the emotions she infuses the different scenes with and the tonal variations she creates for the dialogue in these books is wonderful. Tavia’s narration adds to rather than diminishes my enjoyment of the stories.

B.J. Harrison

About B.J. Harrison

Narrator - B.J. Harrison

It started when he did Muppet impressions at a talent show. He was 8. He killed it. BJ later became a scenic artist and sculptor for TV and film, where for 20 years, he listened to audiobooks every day.

In 2007, when his Classic Tales Podcast hit the scene, BJ Harrison wowed audiences with his voicing skills. Now, over 580 audiobooks later, he continues to impress critics and listeners alike. From eldritch witches to young ingénues, from marble-mouthed gangsters to Shakespearean Danes, BJ has an astounding array of character voices, dialects, and accents at his fingertips.

He still does a mean Swedish Chef, but nowadays it only comes out when he’s banging pots around in the kitchen. Or cooking.

Harrison varies his tone to convey the appropriate emotion in every scene he reads. The pace is good and I like the subtle voices he creates for all the characters. Plus, I don’t ever feel confused about who is speaking during any of the dialogue.

As an author, she understands the importance of drawing the reader into the world of the story. As a voracious reader, she enjoys an eclectic range of genre and carries that over into the studio: from contemporary romance to paranormal thrillers, historical fiction to epic fantasy, from erotica to tamer New Adult/Young Adult titles.

Everyone has a story to tell, and Hollie loves to bring those stories to life, one word at a time.

Hollie has a wealth of accents and voices; creating just the right one for each character. The pace that she reads at and the emotion she puts in transports me into every scene. I think that she’s a talented voice actor.
