A pack betrayed beyond smoldering ash and a tragic death... An Alpha on a ruthless mission for justice...
There wasn't anything that Aristan ShadowShifter Aidan Bloodlocke received in his checkered life that he didn't have to pay for with blood and bone. And when one of his own leaves his people's home in ruins and murders another, he's on the hunt for retribution. He expected to run into his people's rivals, Thesian ShadowShifters, and he expected to outsmart human authorities in his pursuit. But what he didn't expect was falling for Maddie Ardelle-a gorgeous, but very human veterinarian who finds herself caught in Aidan's mission.
When Maddie moved to Bridgepoint to start a normal, peaceful life on her own, she didn't expect to get entangled with a sexy biker shifter that made her weak in the knees. Against their will, Maddie and Aidan's worlds collide, and with an attraction so enthralling, both are helpless to resist. As Aidan struggles to fight for both love and duty, he uncovers a betrayal so heinous, it puts the lives of his entire pack and the brave woman he desires at unthinkable risk. The stakes are high, and both must decide if Maddie ultimately can live in his violent world of teeth and claw in this action-packed paranormal romance series!

What did I like about Selenium Night?
I have read other stories by Kharma Kelley and I enjoy her take on the paranormal world. Her slant on the werewolf myth in this book was something that I haven’t come across before. I find her writing style to be breezy with a good dose of sarcasm and enjoyed the inclusion of pop culture quotes and shows making this a very easy book to read.
As Selenium Night is the first book in a new series, I understand that it’s a fine balance between imparting information and pace of plot. Ms Kelley has built a complex paranormal world filled with her two species of wolf shapeshifters and has created an interesting history spanning millennia.
When the characters are created with depth of personality, my engagement soars.
Ms Kelley’s story was populated with complex, multifaceted and completely believable ones. I think it was partly due to their very real human virtues and foibles, even though most of them were mythical, paranormal beings that kept me reading.
Those of you who have read my reviews before, will know that I also connect to a story more when our leading female character is intelligent, resilient and has a good sense of humour; I wasn’t disappointed here. I loved our heroine, Maddie; she’s got all of the traits that I crave and more – a good sense of humour, loyal, resilient, a beautiful sense of moral duty and oodles of gumption!
I really enjoyed the different aspects of Selenium Night.
The relationship development, the adventure and all the twists and surprises turned this story from a good book to a really good one. Not to mention the passionate, erotic sex scenes. Oh my! Going from titillated to excited, adrenaline pumped to blubbering like a baby – I was an emotional wreck!
This book kicks off with an explosive prologue that I loved – a peek at the Moon Goddess twins who created the species. Plus there’s a lovely epilogue to tie up loose ends. I LOVE that there are no gaping cliffhangers at the end of this book. The romance and threat aspects of the tale are happily concluded by the end.
Was there anything I disliked about it?
So, now I have to be honest and say why I rated Selenium Night 4 stars instead of 5.
I really did enjoy this book but I have to be honest and say that some of the dialogue and actions of the villain of the book had me rolling my eyes; I’m not a great fan of clichés, luckily the bulk of the story had me gripped meaning those niggles didn’t play on my mind for long.
I am probably also being rather mean to Ms Kelley and doing her book a dis-service but I need to explain, the Kindle version I downloaded was in desperate need of a proof-reader and editor, so much so that it hindered the flow of the story and took the edge of my enjoyment a wee bit.
Basically what I’m saying is…
I really enjoyed Selenium Night. It has everything that I look for in a good book; adventure, mystery, intrigue, action, humour and a sprinkling of romance and enough passion to make me blush on the bus.
This book has graphic violence and explicit sex as well as some darker themes. Therefore, I’d only recommend this book to adults who are OK reading material of this nature.
I’d recommend Selenium Night to adult readers who want strong alpha heroes and independent capable heroines. Plotlines that are tense and often have cruel confrontations and hot lust/romance scenes.
I’ll definitely look out for book 2 in this series as I’m intrigued where Ms Kelley will take us next.
