Monthly Wrap Up

August 2020 Monthly Wrap Up

Featured Image - Monthly Wrap Up - August 2020

Hello and welcome to my August 2020 monthly wrap up post.

Usually, the weekends are the only time that I can sit back and catch up on life – both on and off the blog. However, as I’m on summer break (at least until Tuesday 1st), every day has felt like a weekend!

So what have I been up to this month?

Well, August has certainly been different from the previous four months, hasn’t it?!

The lowlight continued to be all about Coronavirus COVID-19. Things are definitely trying to get back to normal here in England. People are able to go out and about; pubs, shops, hairdressers, cinemas, etc., more businesses are taking their employees off furlough and Brits are travelling abroad on holiday. However, I’m concerned about the potential spike in cases and our death count in the UK continues to rise. We still don’t have a vaccine, although the scientists are working really hard to have one before this winter’s flu season! 😢

But I don’t want to dwell on the virus. The highlights for me this month include being off for the summer holidays. Yeh! School opens up on 2nd September. I’m not sure what our primary school will look like then, but we’ll do our best to follow the guidance while teaching the National Curriculum.

In case you didn’t know, Flora’s Musings is a self-hosted blog. I’m still with WordPress, but now I’m blog hosted by ChemiCloud.

Click the ChemiCloud logo above and check them out. They’ve still got a 65% sale on at the moment which means their plans start at just 2.76 per month! If you use my link, I’ll get a little referrer fee credited to my account. Thank you. 💜

It’s still a keen learning curve, and I’m far from being an expert. However, I’m enjoying the experience and love how freeing it is to be self-hosted. I’ve downloaded the Ultimate Book Blogger plugin by Ashley @ NoseGraze. Thanks to Kimberley @ Caffeinated Reviewer for the referral.

You’ll probably notice the change to my reviews going forward as I update them using the UBB plugin. The plugin also means that you will soon be able to find specific reviews more easier in the future too, as it creates a searchable Review Archive.

While I’m making all these changes, please let me know if any pages, posts or links throughout Flora’s Musings either doesn’t open or you have problems with.

💜💚💜 Hello lovely followers! 💜💚💜

As you might remember, this year I’m tracking my follower count. Flora’s Musings has now surpassed the 475 followers mark and, as I type this, there are now 482 of you! That’s flippin’ amazing! I’m now more than confident that we can reach (and surpass) 500 followers before too long.

Thank You - My Follower Count 475+

Stats for my fellow nerds

The lovely Kal produces an amazing package of free Blogger Spreadsheets and graphics. I downloaded them at the beginning of the year and I’m now a stats nerd! I love looking at my numbers, comparing them to last week, month or year. The spreadsheets help me keep track of my bookish stats like ARCs, books read, ratings as well as bloggish stats too. You’ve got to check them out!

Some of my favourite YTD (Year To Date) stats include:

Has 2020 been a good reading year so far?

This comes as no surprise to me. I’ve honed my skills when it comes to which books I pick up. Life’s too short to waste time reading a story that you don’t think you’ll enjoy, or about characters that you know will frustrate the hell out of you. Also, the fact that I’m trying to finish reading some much-loved series this year ensures a large number of great greats.

Where do my reads come from?

I don’t use a library, so the borrowed column is referring to Kindle Unlimited. Where do your books come from?

Which days are popular with you, my followers?

Apparently, you like visiting Flora’s Musings on a Friday. Does this mean that my Friday Finds posts are your favourites? I’m so touched that you visit so often. I’ve downloaded a new plugin this week that tracks how visitors to Flora’s Musings engage with my pages and posts. I’ll let you know all about it next month.

It wouldn’t be an August 2020 monthly wrap up if I didn’t include what I’d posted this month.

Posting The Usual Blogginess

Shanah is taking a much-earned break from hosting the weekly Top 5 Tuesday meme. She’s passed the mantle to the lovely Meeghan @ Meeghan Reads. I’m taking a break myself as I work on my blog but may join in with the occasional week. Watch this space! I’m still writing my Friday Finds posts and answering the questions on Billy’s Book Blogger Hop.

I try to return as many visits and comments as I can, but, I’m sorry if I’ve missed anyone this month.

My Current Reading Challenges (2)

If you’ve been following me for a while, you’ll know that I take part in the Goodreads Annual Reading Challenge but that’s not the only one I take part in. I thought that I’d use these regular wrap up posts to update you on my progress in all the challenges that I’m taking part in …

Amazingly, I haven’t taken part in any new monthly reading challenges for months. BUT. I have signed up to two annual challenges this year outside of Goodreads. Bloody hell, what was I thinking!! 😂 🤦‍♀️ 😂

🎧 2020 Audiobook Challenge 🎧

I’ve been listening to more and more audiobooks each year, so decided to take advantage of my growing addiction interest. 😉 I think I’ve been doing quite well so far. Check out my progress on My Audiobook Challenge 2020 page.

🏁 Finishing The Series Challenge 🏁

This year, I was lamenting over how many unfinished series were on my TBR pile. Therefore, I joined the Celebrity Readers’ challenge to help. Check out my slow but steady progress on Finishing The Series Reading Challenge 2020 page.

~ The ARCs Still On My Shelf ~

Like so many of you, I use my blog to review ARCs (Advanced or Early Reader Copy). Book, ebooks and audiobooks that I receive from authors or publishers. I’m registered on NetGalley and I’ve just signed up to BookSirens. Do any of you get books from BookSirens?

Check out my current ARCs calendar. I think my monthly commitments are looking good.

  • September Releases ~ Sea of the Dead (17th)
  • October Releases ~ nothing yet!
  • November Releases ~ nothing yet!
  • December Releases ~ nothing yet!

I’ve managed to stick to my ARC Requests Plan! Limiting myself to only requesting a couple per month and trying to ensure the release dates are spread out. My ARC TBR pile is now happily under control! 😇

Thank you to the wonderful authors, publishers, tour organisers, BookSirens and NetGalley. The opportunity you give me to read books and feed my addiction is more than appreciated! 😉

~ A Bit Of Randomness ~

I love browsing the various groups I belong to as they always seem to have such great memes for every occasion. 😉 This is the image I’ve chosen for my August 2020 monthly wrap up. Be strong sisters!!

Friendly reminder that Leia has lost her adoptive parents, entire planet, father, husband, son and been abandoned by her brother and yet has never been tempted by the dark side even once. Take notes Skywalker boys. Ya'll weak as shit.

I’ve been linking up to The Sunday Post which is a weekly meme hosted by the lovely Kimberly @ Caffeinated Reviewer. Today, I’m also linking up to the Monthly Wrap-Up Round-Up co-hosted by the fabulous Nicole @ Feed Your Fiction Addiction and Shannon @ It Starts At Midnight.

(See rules here: Sunday Post Meme ¦ Monthly Wrap-Up Round-Up)

Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to read my August 2020 monthly wrap up post.

About Me

I'm in my late forties, my interests are varied but since menopause hit a few years ago, I find myself becoming a "grumpy old woman" all too frequently - where has my infinite patience gone!?! Lol!
I bought a Kindle in the summer of 2013 and haven't stopped reading since. If you want to know more about me, check out my blog -

I think that it’s awesome you’ve learned how to select great books for reading and I totally agree–life is too short to read a book you don’t like for any reason. If I don’t like a book after the first chapter, I put it down and choose another. As a mood reader, maybe the book I put down will be okay at a different time, or maybe it’s just not right for me. I hope you are staying safe and healthy this month with school especially.

    1. Flora says:

Thanks Danielle. Hope you’re staying safe and healthy

  2. Hope you love UBB. I’ve been using it for years, and I think it’s great!

    1. Thanks Nicole. I’m getting my head around what I can achieve with it. I’m slowly adding it to my archive reviews (1,000 of them) but it’s slow going. I know my site wont be fully searchable until I do.

  3. UBB plugin is a Godsend. I was originally on blogger and moved to self-hosted WordPress earlier this year, it was the best thing I could have done.

    1. I’m glad you’re happy being self-hosted. I’m getting to grips with what I can do with UBB plugin. What I’m not looking forward to is going back through 1,000 reviews and updating them! Lol!

  4. Great stats! I’ve started keeping an eye on mine but in a nice notepad!!

Stay safe, people here in Scotland are acting like everythings back to normal, its crazy.

    Have a good week.

    1. Thanks Heather.
I know, all around the country they think the virus is gone! Idiots!

  5. Sounds like you are making lots of improvement s on your blog which must be very satisfying!

    1. It is, Marg. But it’s an evolving process. Lol!

  6. I’ve actually been thinking about switching to being self hosted. I definitely have to do a little more research first but I’m thinking about it 🙂

    1. Flora says:

The great thing about is that it’s free. If you get to the stage where you’re considering upgrading to their business plan, Rachelle, then self-hosting might be a better option. Well that’s what I found.

  7. Sophie @BewareOfTheReader says:

Congrats on your followers Flora! And eys things are slowly going back to a new normal in Belgium too.

    1. Flora says:

      Thanks Sophie.

  8. I use the UBB also. It makes it more organized and less work for me it seems. You’re doing great on followers! Enjoy your reads!

Anne – Books of my Heart Here is my Sunday Post

    1. Flora says:

Thanks Anne. It’s a great plugin – I’m slowly updating my older posts.

  9. Wishing you the best for September!

    1. Flora says:

      Thank you Freda, you too.

  10. I hope the new school year goes smoothly.
All my reads end up being ARCs, every time I think I have a handle on it, more show up!

Congrats on the continued growth of your blog!

Wishing you a great reading week

    1. Flora says:

Thanks Shellyrae. I’ve requested a few ARCs recently, but I’m waiting to hear if I’m approved. Hope you have a great reading week too.

  11. Congrats on the followers! I’m glad things are getting back to normal where you live. I think we’re a long way from normal in my part of the world. Have a great week!

    1. Flora says:

Thanks Aj. I don’t think the world will be “normal” for a very long time but I’m hopeful. Hope you have a great week too.

  12. Congrats on moving to self hosting. I’ve been debating it for years but right now I don’t have the time to setting it up.

    1. Flora says:

Thanks Donna. You definitely need the time to spend on you blog when you first go self-hosted as there’s quite a bit to sort out behind the scenes. Luckily, my life was accommodating due to COVID19. Gotta find a positive, right?!
