Fun Q&A with Dianne Duvall

Flora: Hello Dianne and welcome to Flora’s Musings…

Dianne: Hi, Flora! Thanks so much for letting me visit again.

Flora: Dianne, I‘m a huge fan of the world that you’ve created in your three series – the Gifted Ones, Aldebarian Alliance and, of course, Immortal Guardians – and have loved reading each one. How do you decide which series to work on? Do you have lots of notebooks with partial plots, character bios, and potential story arcs?

Dianne: Since I’m a pantser (meaning I fly by the seat of my pants) rather than a plotter, I don’t have any notebooks, files, or even scraps of paper with partial plots, bios, or story arcs scribbled on them. All of that information just rambles around in my imagination constantly. 🙂 At any given moment, there are at least five stories in my head either begging me to write them or already beginning to write themselves. Whichever one clamors the loudest is the next one I’ll sit down to write.

Flora: Dianne, you pride yourself on the fact that all your books can be read as standalone titles although they’re set in the same world. Cliff’s Descent is different from previous books as Cliff isn’t an Immortal Guardian or Gifted One. However, he is a well-established character. He’s been in the series almost from the beginning. How do you decide what information new fans will need? I imagine it’s a fine line to ensure readers aren’t bogged down with explanations.

Dianne: Cliff’s story, as you mentioned, is one that has been building for years. But we’ve really only seen glimpses of it here and there. Much of it has actually taken place outside the pages of the other books. Even so, I decided to start CLIFF’S DESCENT with the very first scene in which he appeared in the Immortal Guardians series so new readers can see how it all began and won’t be lost. 🙂

Flora: Cliff’s played a role in lots of adventures since the Immortal Guardians series began. When did you decide that Cliff needed his own book? Will we see other non-IG characters getting their own books? I’m hinting at Reordan and Kate, and Sheldon and Tracy. 😉 I’d love the idea of a box set of novellas about the supporting characters.

Dianne: I knew when I wrote SHADOWS STRIKE that I wanted to give Cliff his own book, something BLADE OF DARKNESS made a certainty. Everything you’ll see in CLIFF’S DESCENT has been vividly taking place in my imagination while I wrote the other books in the series. And I very much wanted readers to see what has been happening behind the scenes, so to speak. I also very much wanted them to meet the woman who helps Cliff hold the madness at bay far longer than most vampires do. I really love these two together and hope you will, too. 🙂

As for other non-IG characters getting their own books… I love that the secondary characters resonate so well with readers. I’ve actually been toying with the idea of launching a sister series that revolves around the mortals in the Immortal Guardians series. I’ve received so many requests for Chris Reordon’s, Sheldon’s, Linda’s, Darnell’s, and even Tanner’s stories, some of which have already begun writing themselves in my head. So I’m thinking quite a few non-IGs will be getting their own books in the future.

Flora: Ooh, yes, please. I’d love to get my hands on those stories. Thank you, Dianne, for answering my questions and for writing such mind-blowingly good stories.

Dianne: Thank you, Flora, for the fun interview and for helping me celebrate the big release. I hope you’ll enjoy CLIFF’S DESCENT!

Dianne’s latest book, Cliff’s Descent (Immortal Guardians #11) will be available to buy from 27th July in print, ebook and audiobook!

The Immortal Guardians series by Dianne Duvall

Featured Immage - Immortal Guardians series by Dianne Duvall (2021)

Immortal Guardians series sits in the paranormal romance genre. However, it could also sit happily on an urban fantasy shelf due to much of the content. Set in our modern human world, it features a new twist on the vampire genre.

Immortals and vampires are both infected with the same virus, which lends them dramatically increased strength, speed, healing capabilities and enhanced senses. Vampires are humans who have been infected, whereas Immortals are Gifted Ones who have been infected. Gifted Ones are men and women who were born with extremely advanced DNA that lends them special gifts, such as healing, telepathy, precognition and the like. Vampires rapidly descend into madness when the virus damages their brains but Immortals don’t; their advanced DNA protects them from that aspect of the virus.
