In February 2020 I wrote a post about Paranormal Women’s Fiction (PWF). A new genre of paranormal romance (PNR), urban fantasy and paranormal cosy mystery stories where we have Generation X (Gen X), female protagonists. Women in their 40s or older. Woohoo! 露♀️
I was really excited. Finally, I might be able to find characters that I could relate to.
I’m a confident 49-year-old menopausal woman, so I’m not dead yet. 😉 I remember what it was like to be a teen and a twentysomething – it was lots of fun at the time. 😉 Life is still fun, daunting, and exciting at 49. However, I’m now at a stage in my life where I’m comfortable in my own skin, I’m happily learning to find myself again as my children are becoming adults themselves.
I want to read about heroines in PNR and urban fantasy that take on the bad guys, save the day and are in the same stage of life as me.
Many protagonists in speculative fiction are supposed to be older than they look. Vampires in their hundreds, fae ageing in their thousands, and witches or shifters who are decades older than they appear. (I think this is supporting the media view that being young and beautiful is the ideal. *tut*tut*) However, that issue aside, these characters are still thinking, acting and saying things indicative of someone far younger! It’s my main bug-bear.
Therefore, I’ve compiled the list below to include books with an older protagonist who’s got great common sense, intelligence, is helpful, resourceful, resilient, and has the experience to be a good troubleshooter or problem-solver.
