What is Paranormal Women’s Fiction?

13 amazing paranormal romanceurban fantasy and paranormal cozy mystery authors teamed up in 2020 to write books where the protagonists are women in their 40s or older. Paranormal Women’s Fiction (PWF) was born! Since then more authors are adding their books to the PWF genre. As a menopausal woman within spitting distance of the big 5-0, I’m overjoyed that this new genre is gaining momentum.

Now, on to my review…

What did I think?

A Great Conclusion To This Mysterious Adventure

I’ve really enjoyed the Midlife Mulligan books. I loved the premise and found the stories very easy to get into. The plots in all three have had enough mystery to keep my Sherlock Holmes tendencies occupied. We’re introduced to a range of wonderful characters, the diversity is fantastic! There are personalities that made me melt, while others set off all of my alarm bells. But best of all is that we’re kept guessing whether the strange things happening to and around Naomi were caused by something supernatural or human.

Don’t Stop Believing is marketed as a PWF.

That’s not to say women who haven’t reached their 40s won’t enjoy the stories or connect to them. After all, being single again after a long-term relationship ends is tricky for all of us, no matter what our age. As is recovering from a toxic relationship and finding yourself again. However, as a menopausal woman in my late 40s, I love how true-to-life Naomi’s age-related issues are in this series.

Nicole Poole is a fabulous narrator.

I love the pace she reads the book and her skill at drawing out the appropriate emotions for each scene. Nicole has a good variety of voices and accents that she can apply to the different characters. I was never confused about who was speaking during scenes with conversations between any number of characters.

I could connect with our protagonist, Naomi, and felt her situation to my core.

Although Naomi didn’t start off as a traditional badass heroine, Don’t Stop Believing has seen her grow both in confidence and her magical abilities. At times, Naomi’s thoughts, stubbornness and actions have frustrated me. However, I’ve learned that these traits are very common in women who’ve been in long term toxic situations like Naomi’s. She’s come out the other end stronger. Revelations in this book brought out some secrets that shed further light on Naomi’s past. Revelations that forced me to rethink my assumptions – I love it when an author can pull the rug from beneath my feet! Naomi has grown into the type of protagonist I love – she’s a realistic badass who exhibits all the traits I look for.

Don’t Stop Believing is another well-balanced story.

There’s some dry humour, lots of mysteries, a thriller feel as well as relationship threads woven throughout. The story is paranormal but with a second-chance women’s fiction message. Don’t Stop Believing ties up all of the main story threads of the Midlife Mulligan series. However, there is a wonderful epilogue that hopefully means that Eve plans to write more stories in this magical universe. I can’t wait to see what she comes up with next.

Keep reading to find out more about this series and its author.

I'm in my late forties, my interests are varied but since menopause hit a few years ago, I find myself becoming a "grumpy old woman" all too frequently - where has my infinite patience gone!?! Lol!
