He awakens encapsulated in dirt with no knowledge of how he came to be there. Riddled with injuries, he can remember neither his past nor who he is. Nor can he remember what he is. But surely no mortal man could survive being buried deep beneath the earth. All he knows with certainty is that the soothing voice and presence of the woman moving around above enables him to endure the agony of his wounds. And he will do whatever it takes to be with her.
When Susan first sees the old two-story house for sale, such warmth and longing fill her that—against all reason—she makes an offer. It will take years of hard work and money she frankly doesn’t have to fix up the place. So she can’t explain why she bought it. She also can’t explain what compels her to spend hours one night, digging in the basement until she unearths a man. A man who still lives and breathes despite having been buried alive. A man whose intense brown eyes glow amber with pain, declaring him far more than ordinary. Susan knows she should keep her distance. He has no memory and possesses gifts that would make most fear him. But as the two work together to unravel the mystery of his past, she finds herself drawn in by his teasing nature and tender touch. So much so that she loses her heart to him even as they find themselves hunted by unknown enemies who are ruthless in their quest to capture them.

This series is paranormal romance at its best, with an urban fantasy feel due to some of the grittier content. The setting for the series is modern-day North Carolina, USA and features a new twist on the vampire genre.
Vampire or Immortal – what’s the difference?
Immortals and vampires are both infected with the same virus, which lends them dramatically increased strength, speed, healing capabilities and enhanced senses. Vampires are humans who have been infected, whereas immortals are gifted ones who have been infected. Gifted ones are men and women who were born with extremely advanced DNA that lends them special gifts, such as healing, telepathy, precognition and the like. Vampires rapidly descend into madness when the virus damages their brains but Immortals don’t; their advanced DNA protects them from that aspect of the virus.
What did I like about Awaken The Darkness?
I really like Ms Duvall’s writing style and find her books very easy to read (but not so easy to put down! Lol!). She writes intelligent, engaging stories with a collection of well written characters, set against an imaginative world that cleverly mixes fantasy and reality. Making it so easy to submerse yourself completely in her books. The pace of her stories is usually fast, full of action and contains a couple of plot lines which run alongside the main romantic story arc. However, fear not lovely readers, she manages to pack this all in without making you feel overwhelmed, bewildered or lost.
Awaken The Darkness did not let me down.
I loved that Awaken The Darkness starts off with a prologue. The epic battle from two years ago, as featured in Shadow Strike (book 6). I enjoyed reading this critical turning point for the Immortal Guardians Unit from Stanislav’s perspective.
I enjoy books where the characters are not black or white, good or evil but a multifaceted mix of positive and negative traits.
Thankfully most of the characters within the Immortal Guardians world are like this. The fact that the characters within these pages have been written with personalities that we can see in the real world around us adds credibility to this fantasy tale. Even though the majority of them are mythical, paranormal beings.
If you’ve read my reviews before, then you’ll know that I connect to a story more if the female protagonist is intelligent, resilient and has a good sense of humour.
I wasn’t disappointed here, our protagonist, Susan was perfect.
She had oodles of gumption and I thought that it was hilarious that Ms Duvall made her an author of Historical Romance novels. Write about what you know, Dianne? Lol!! We had already met Stanislav from previous books. Although, he was always on the peripheral and therefore I hadn’t really developed a connection to him. However, I enjoyed finding more about him in this book and understand the type of man he is – gallant.
The action and fighting in this story kept me on the edge of my seat. While the mystery and thriller aspect kept me guessing. My heart was warmed by the romance between Stanislav and Susan while other areas tingled at the passion. 😉
Was there anything I disliked about it?
Nope. Some of the more violent scene sent my emotions spinning. However, there’s nothing about this book that I didn’t absolutely love!!
Ms Duvall tries to ensure her new readers aren’t lost or overwhelmed. She weaves any pertinent information about past adventures and existing characters into her plots. The romance aspect of the tale between Stanislav and Susan is concluded by the end of this book. Ms Duvall needs her creations to have a HEA.
However, in all honestly, I don’t think that Awaken The Darkness can be read as a standalone story. You’d miss the nuances of knowing the existing characters and understanding the dynamics of all the relationships. As with most series, there are story threads that are concluded within this book while others are left to continue into subsequent ones.
Therefore, what I’m saying is…
I loved Awaken The Darkness – couldn’t stop reading it!
It had everything that I look for in a 5 star book; intelligent writing style that’s easy to read, main characters with depth of personality that I can believe in, depth of character in the supporting cast, believable background story/setting and a balanced mix of relationship and/or romance to action scenes and sex scenes. I was left breathless, wondering where Ms Duvall would take us next in this addictive series!
This book has sexual scenes, violence, colourful vocabulary and expletives throughout the story. Therefore, I’d only recommend it to adults who are not offended by content of this sort.
I’d recommend Awaken the Darkness to adults who enjoy stories with tense, traumatic and brutal confrontations. Readers who want strong, deadly heroes and independent capable heroines. But especially those who love beautiful romances with hot sex scenes.

The Immortal Guardians series by Dianne Duvall
Immortal Guardians series sits in the paranormal romance genre. However, it could also sit happily on an urban fantasy shelf due to much of the content. Set in our modern human world, it features a new twist on the vampire genre.
