Dating The Undead (Bite Nights #1)

by Juliet Lyons

Read: 1st – 2nd January 2018

Format: Kindle

My Goodreads Rating: 4 Stars

So what’s this book about?

Dating The Undead is the first book (approx 352 pages) in Ms Lyons’ Bite Nights series.  It is a paranormal romance story set in modern Britain where vampires are no longer creatures of myth and legend but live alongside us, although they still have their secrets that they like to keep close to their chests.

If you’ve read any of my reviews before, you’ll know that I don’t post spoilers of any kind or reveal any plot twists in my book reviews, so here’s what the official blurb has to say about the story:

For those mortals wanting to get up close and personal with the beautiful undead, there’s…

Silver Harris is done with clingy men—maybe men altogether. But when she shares a toe-curling kiss with a sexy Irish vampire on New Year’s Eve, she decides maybe it’s human men she’s done with. Silver turns to the popular vampire dating site, V-Date. When the undead gentlemen come calling, soon she’s in over her head. And her mysterious hottie is nowhere to be found…

Logan Byrne can’t get that sassy redhead out of his head—or that kiss! When his boss assigns him to spy on V-Date members, he meets Silver again. Turns out, the police are recruiting humans to snitch on vampires through the dating site. As the snark and sparks fly, feelings between Silver and Logan grow deep. Logan isn’t sure he can go through with his mission to make Silver forget everything she knows about vampires…and betray her.

But in the tight-knit London community of centuries-old vampires, history and grudges run deep and dating the undead can be risky business.

So, what did I like about it?

Juliet Lyons is a new-to-me author; I liked her writing style and found this story very easy to read. I liked how she mixed fantasy and reality to create a world that I could believe in and I loved the new twists she created for her vampires, how they are made, the hints at their origins and their society/social hierarchy; I look forward to seeing the world and the intricacies further expanded in the ensuing novels.

I liked the fact that Ms Lyons wrote this tale from a “first person point of view” but allowed both her hero and heroine to lead the reader with their own chapters/sections giving us a chance to read their inner dialogue; it added a further depth of understanding.  I relished the fact that Silver and Logan are both complex, multifaceted characters with their own set of foibles and emotional baggage. I felt as though I really got to know them during this book.

There are a couple of stories running in the background to the main romance and I enjoyed all the twists and turns that Ms Lyons’ built into her various plot lines. But, I’ve got to say I REALLY appreciated the cliffhanger-free ending, thank you Ms Lyons for ending Silver and Logan’s story with a nice epilogue that answered some of my questions about the couple.

I experienced many emotions while reading Dating The Undead; the banter and situations Silver got herself into made me chuckle, I shed a tear or two during the more emotional revelations, the fighting and action scenes fed my adrenalin, the romance warmed my heart and the passion put fire in my blood. In other words I was gripped and couldn’t stop reading.

So, ummm, was there anything I disliked about it?

One of the background stories in this book, is concerning London’s Metropolitan Police and their interest in vampires. I won’t say what but just that there were certain situations and aspects that didn’t completely feel right for me. However, as Dating The Undead is the first book in this series, I was willing to put that aside and assume that this aspect would develop in future books.

So, basically what I’m saying is…

I really enjoyed this story and didn’t want it to end. The premise of this book and series caught my attention (as well as the front cover and low price on Amazon UK) but it was the writing and plot development that kept me reading. I have already bought the next book Drop Dead Gorgeous and added That Killer Smile (Bite Nights #3) to my Amazon wish list.

I would recommend this book to readers who enjoy beautifully cute romance stories with pages of titillating eroticism interspersed with kick-arse action and witty banter.
