I am already a big fan of Kate Baxter’s Last True Vampire series. However, I’m also beginning to enjoy Milly Taiden’s stories although I’ve yet to buy a book by either Eve Langlais or Milly Taiden.
Read: 24th – 31st August 2018
The expected publication date is 2nd October 2018.
What did I think about In The Mood Fur Love?
I’m sharing my thoughts and rating each novella separately.
Novella 1 Bearing His Touch by Eve Langlais
What did I think about this story?
Eve Langlais is still a fairly new-to-me author (I haven’t purchased any of her full length novels); I don’t think that she writes my kind of stories.
The first few chapters are fraught and full of tension and action that I found quite gripping.
Our hero, Stavros is an ex-cop bear shifter. The bear and man share the same mind and I enjoyed the humorous inner dialogue going on between the two. I liked the protect women and children mindset that he had.
Our heroine, Becka, is not physically strong but I liked that she was resilient and survived physical and mental abuse as a kidnap victim. What I struggled with was that although this is a fictional paranormal romance story, I had to reign in my reluctance to believe that an abused woman would begin to allow or want physical contact so quickly. However, I understand that the story has to progress and we do not have infinite pages in a novella.
Once again, I feel that the prose in this story really lets it down. I was far from impressed with Ms Langlais sentence structure and word choices in this novella. There were also a few missing capital letters too. However, as I’ve yet to actually purchase a book written by her, I can’t compare this ARC to a finished, published work.
I enjoyed this story.
There’s just one sex scene but it is very good and titillating. I liked that the conclusion was a twist/shock and although slightly twee I thought it a nice way to end a paranormal romance with the trademark HEA.
My Rating: 2 Stars (It was OK)
Novella 2 – Fake Mated To The Wolf by Milly Taiden
My thoughts about this story?
I really liked the concept for this story. I found it very easy to read and the plot had me growling in indignation, chuckling and put a lump in my throat.
Although I have yet to buy a book written by Milly Taiden, her stories are growing on me.
The story itself is engaging. A classic paranormal romance with a HEA ending. Ms Taiden has written a couple of plot-lines that run alongside the romance aspect. Shawna’s family and the weird mystery nuisance caller. I enjoyed getting my teeth stuck into these aspects as the romance between Hawke and Shawna evolved.
Our heroine, Shawna is certainly a lady with gumption. Anyone who has read my reviews before, will know that this is a personality trait that I admire and crave in my leading ladies.
Got to be honest, there were a few little things that I struggled with.
Firstly, our hero’s name – Hawke Hawke (really?!) – it took the shine off wee bit. I’ve got to confess that the sex talk and descriptions for that final sex scene were a bit disappointing too. It all turned me off rather than got me hot. We didn’t really get to the bottom of the mystery calls. Plus I thought that the end felt a bit rushed. As I was reading a pre-proofed arc, I tried to ignore the editing needs and assumed that they would be fixed before publication so won’t detail them here.
However, I understand that writing a standalone novella is challenging.
Creating a full, engaging story within so few pages and getting the balance right between building and describing the scenes and moving the plot along is tough. I do think Ms Taiden did a good job here.
My Rating: 3 Stars (It was Good)
Novella 3 – The Witch, The Werewolf and The Waitress and I by Kate Baxter
What did I think about this novella?
I’m already a fan of Ms Baxter’s books. Her writing style is very easy to read, her plots engaging and her characters intelligently written and full of depth. I was delighted to find the same level of care and attention in this novella.
I enjoyed how we were introduced to our leading hero and heroine.
Both are keeping secrets from those around them but exhibit personality traits that I love my leading characters to have. Throughout this novella, Ms Baxter managed to catch me out. Just when I think our hero will be a Neanderthal alpha (yuk) Colin says or does something to melt my heart and wish he was my boyfriend. Plus, I loved “can’t lie to a mate without pain” addition to the traditional werewolf lore that Ms Baxter created here.
Ellie may not be strong physically but I loved her resilience. I suppose if you’ve already got first-hand experience of the supernatural world, meeting someone who claims to be a paranormal being is easier to believe. Therefore, I could appreciate Ellie’s rapid acceptance of Colin being a werewolf. Plus, knowing of Ellie’s lonely life to-date, I completely understood her desperation to grab the sexual opportunity when it presents itself. So, in this case, the insta-lust that I usually find so off-putting was acceptable.
As a self-contained standalone story with the added restriction of being a novella rather than a full-size novel, I understand that aspects had to be concluded with no loose ends in reduced pages. However, I’m satisfied with how Ms Baxter concluded this novella; the mystery and the romance aspects.
In short, I really enjoyed this story and I was gripped from beginning to end. I laughed, I cried, I held my breath in anxiety and I felt the flutters of arousal.
My Rating: 4 Stars (I really enjoyed it)
Basically, what I’m saying is…
I think that this paranormal romance anthology is GOOD, I enjoyed reading it. Of the three novellas, there is only one that was just OK. I felt that this book was a good opportunity to read a new story from a favourite author. However, I think I’d have felt a bit short-changed if I’d actually purchased this for myself. n.b. the current Kindle selling price of £7.59 seems rather expensive to me, I feel £5.99 would be a fairer price.
There are scenes of explicit sexual content and graphic violence in this book. Therefore, I’d only recommend it to adults who aren’t offended by scenes of this sort.
I’d recommend In The Mood Fur Love to existing fans of the authors. Readers who love relationship and romance stories with oodles of action and passion.
