Read: 29th March 2019
Publication Date: 27th February 2019
My Overall Rating: 5/5
Plot: 5/5 – Flow: 5/5 – Character Development: 5/5 – World Building: 4/5
Quote from Nicole
“You’re… back?” He [Mitch] cocked his eyebrow as he leaned back in the chair. “And what does your big, decapitating vampire husband think of this?”
Nicole shrugged one shoulder. “I’ll let you know as soon as I talk to him.”
So what’s Nicole about?
Nicole is a paranormal romance and the first book (approx 211 pages) in Teresa Gabelman’s new The Mates series. A highly anticipated spin-off from her bestselling series The Protectors. This new series is about the mates – the wives and partners – to the VC Warriors based in Cincinnati, USA.
The VC Warriors work for the Vampire Council as enforcers of vampire and human laws. Protecting innocents and ensuring the guilty are held accountable for their crimes. Each book in this addictive series focuses on the relationship between one couple while multiple story-lines continue in the background.
I focus my reviews on how the story was told rather than the plot itself. I’m looking at the author’s writing style, how they paced their plots and how well they constructed their characters and setting. Therefore, my reviews don’t contain spoilers or reveal plot twists.
Here’s what the official blurb has to say about the story.
Nicole Callahan, mate to fierce and brooding VC Warrior Damon DeMasters, has been trying to find her place in his world. Without a doubt, it’s been interesting, but she believes there’s a lot more she can offer the children she spent so much of her human life fighting for.
The Mate series delves into the kickass world of the Warriors’ mates and how united, they can make a difference—just like their badass Protectors. Follow along to see how these exceptional women’s newfound freedom affect those around them and which Warrior may or may not support their feisty independent mate’s new and exciting path.
**Disclaimer: This series is a spinoff of the Protectors Series, but should be read in the numerical order to coincide with the Protectors.
What did I like about Nicole?
I am already a huge fan of Teresa Gabelman’s writing style. I find her books easy to read, her plots are gripping, the pace is fast but never feels rushed and I’m further drawn into the world with strong main characters and a fantastic array of supporting cast (both human and supernatural) that are totally believable and leave me addicted, desperate for more!
Nicole was worth waiting for.
The first chapter was fantastic; I loved the banter (which happily continues throughout). I had moments of reluctance – I find stories about children in danger very, very hard to deal with. However, I love how Nicole Callahan handled the various situations thrown at her in this book.
Those of you that have read my review before, will know that I enjoy a story more if the lead female character is intelligent, resilient and has a good sense of humour. I knew that I wouldn’t be disappointed here as she’s one of the first characters that we are introduced to in The Protectors series. Nicole is everything that I look for in a lead female character. She’s tough, witty, able to hold her own and a strong moral compass that makes her fight for the underdog even though her own childhood was less than idyllic and she is riddled with insecurities – they don’t hold her back.
I loved that this book had me blubbering like a baby and laughing my socks off. It horrified and shocked me too and got my blood boiling at the injustice and inequality but rest assured, dear readers, like all of Teresa’s books, Nicole definitely hits all the right spots passion-wise *blush* and warmed my old romantic heart. I couldn’t put it down!
Was there anything I disliked about it?
Nope; I loved this book!
The Mate is listed as a spin-off series, however, it’s advisable that the books are read as part of the main series for you to feel truly at home with them. Teresa weaves any background information that you need into Nicole. However, I think that too much has happened and there are now lots of characters to get your head around.
I was prepared for the story to have some cliffhangers, especially regarding the mystery surrounding Special Family Services. However, hand on heart, I can say that I am satisfied with how this book ended. No major life-or-death cliffhanger and a resolution to the relationship issues between Nicole and Damon.
Basically, what I’m saying is…
Wow! I feel breathless – what an amazing paranormal romance story.
Nicole‘s got everything that I’m looking for in a 5 star read; mystery, action, romance, passion, heaps of emotions and plenty of well-written steamy sex scenes. Couldn’t stop reading this book!
This book has sexual scenes, violence, colourful vocabulary and expletives throughout the story. Therefore, I’d only recommend it to adults who are not offended by content of this sort.
I’d recommend Nicole to adults who love relationship dramas. Especially those who enjoy stories with gritty plots with lots of emotion and passion.
