A hospital manager with a heart of gold. A soldier with a dark secret.
Lillian's life is... dull. The highlights of her day, other than her skinny hot chocolate, are the hunky guards who work in the military wing. It's classified and way above her pay grade, but she can't help feeling sorry for the hollow-eyed men and women they shuffle past reception. Then a late night emergency is wheeled in, his abdomen shredded and covered in blood. They’re not an emergency room but she can’t turn him away and risk a death on her hands.
Unable to get the handsome soldier out of her mind, Lillian sneaks into the restricted area and finds herself thrust into a world where nothing makes sense. A world where men aren't always men, the dead walk, and her handsome soldier is way more than he seems...
Her scent calls to him. She's his. Now he has to keep her alive.
Jack Harper was a soldier, a good one... then the Project decided to play god. Now he has permanent anger management issues and a monster living inside him. Used as a weapon, he's been waiting for a chance to strike back. But the Project are onto him.
Ruled unstable, a kill order is passed down on Jack and his squad and they are transferred to St.Margarets. Play-things for the head docs until a bullet to the back of the head deals with them for good. But Jack isn't going down that easily, not when the delicate scent he'd been waiting for all his life wraps around him.
The delicate human woman is his mate. And he'll fight anything the Project throws at him to save her.
Monsters do exist…and they’re the good guys.

Mina has created a new urban fantasy world set in modern America, where a covert government department – the Project – is creating genetically modified soldiers; Bloods, Lycans and RAs.
What did I like about Perfect Mate?
Mina Carter is a new-to-me author and I found this book very easy to read. As this is the first book in a series I expected a lot of world building but I enjoyed how she introduced her world to us, weaving the relevant information into the story using her four main characters – Captain Jack Harper, Lillian (Lilly) Rosewood, Major Antonia (Toni) Fielding and Lieutenant Darcy (Darce) Foster – who all had their stories to tell but I never felt confused with the change of perspectives.
I prefer to read stories with intelligent, witty heroines, who never give up and have plenty of gumption and resilience. Although, I found myself shouting at my Kindle when Lilly put herself in harm’s way or did something that I thought was stupid, I still liked her and was not disappointed. I love that Lilly and Jack get their HEA although not quite in the way I expected and danger still lurks on the horizon for them both.
I inched this story away from paranormal romance and towards urban fantasy because while reading it, the phrase “out of the frying pan and into the fire” continually sprang to mind; this story didn’t let me catch my breath for long before we were into another fight-for-your-life situation. It certainly kept me gripped.
I think I experienced every emotion going reading this book! My blood was boiling in fury, indignation and the injustice, my adrenaline pumped with fear and tension, tears trickled down my cheeks with sorrow, my heart warmed with love and my tummy tingled with titillation.
Was there anything I disliked about Perfect Mate?
I really enjoyed this book as you can tell from the 4 star rating but there were a niggle or two that kept me from giving this book top marks.
My main gripes came from some of the story’s narrative and dialogue. Certain descriptive lines were repeated throughout the book which jumped off the page and I began to roll my eyes and I also felt that some of the dialogue was stilted, uncharacteristic or perhaps too cliché. In fact there is a lot of cliché in this tale, that’s not necessarily a bad thing (I do love my HEAs, after all) but it means that in this case, there was just too much in this story to be a 5 star book for me.
Basically, what I’m saying is…
Goodness me that was one hell of a ride; I really enjoyed this book. Perfect Mate has every aspect that I look for in a great story; adventure, mystery, action, great characters, humour, romance and passion. I’m definitely going to buy the next book – Blood Mate – to see what happens next.
Due to the violence and sexual scenes, I’d recommend this book to adults who are not offended by content of this nature who enjoy urban fantasy adventures centred on soul mate romances with some darker, horror-esque themes and passion.
