Quote from Sinless
When I [Grace] flip open my eyes, he’s [Hadrian] standing just inches away. A breath catches in my throat as I stare at his smooth, bare chest, the hard ripple of stomach muscle leading to the waistband of his tight jeans.
“Most people want to touch them.” He says, gazing down at me.
With a life of their own, my fingers brush the satiny skin of his torso.
He flinches. “My wings, Grace. I actually meant my wings.”
“Oh,” I say, heat creeping into my cheeks. “Sorry.”
Sinless is a standalone paranormal romance novel (approx. 214 pages) written in the same world as Ms Lyon’s Bite Nights series. It’s set in modern Britain where vampires are no longer creatures of myth and legend. They live alongside us. However, many other ancient beings are still very much a closely guarded secret.
I focus my reviews on how the story was told rather than the plot itself. I’m looking at the author’s writing style, how they paced their plots and how well they constructed their characters and setting. Therefore, my reviews don’t contain spoilers or reveal plot twists.
Here’s what the official blurb has to say about the story.
The task is laughably easy … until he meets Grace Black
Hadrian Cross is a half-angel with an attitude. He avoids his goody-two-shoes angelic family and prefers to slum with humans until he tangles with the deadly vampire queen, Esme. Fearing for the lives of his mortal friends, he approaches an ancient archangel for help, but there are strings—lead mortal woman, Grace Black to her soulmate. Hadrian happily complies. All women want to fall in love, right?
Book store owner and cheerful snark, Grace Black doesn’t believe in soulmates, marriage or regrets so when an angel arrives at her front door espousing the virtues of true love and destiny, she laughs in his face. Then makes him take off his shirt to prove he has wings. Grace doesn’t miss the ex who’s her supposed destiny, but Hadrian shirtless and in full flight is not something she wants to forget.
She agrees to his ridiculous offer mostly out of boredom and curiosity, but as they spend time together, they both worry the universe has its wires crossed.

I am already a fan of Ms Lyons writing style. Her stories are very easy to read. I like how she mixes fantasy and reality to create a background that I can easily believe in.
Ms Lyons writes Sinless from a “first person point of view”. However, she allows both her protagonists (Hadrian and Grace) to lead the reader with their own chapters and sections. I like that we see both sides, getting inside their heads. It adds a further depth of understanding of our characters. Neither Grace nor Hadrian are flat two-dimensional characters. Both are multi-layered creations with their own set of foibles and emotional baggage. I love that they must work through all this to obtain their happy-ever-after in this modern romance tale.
The human heroine is attracted to the paranormal hero. Not the lovely, gorgeous human man. Is it real or because of some magical, unintentional mojo that his angelic species has over humans?
I must just mention this interesting spin that made me pause and consider the paranormal romance genre. I love that Juliet added this possibility, making me doubt my assumptions regarding the ending of this book.
In fact, I really enjoyed all the emotions that Sinless elicited from me. The banter and humour made me smile. I shed a tear or two during the more emotional revelations. The action scenes fed my adrenaline fix. The tension of the criminal aspect had me on the edge of my seat. The romance warmed my heart and the passion titillated and put fire in my blood.
I enjoyed this contemporary paranormal romance tale, but there were a couple of biggish niggles that took the shine off.
I don’t write spoilers, therefore I’m not going into details.
However, there were a few plot “surprises” that I’d already worked out well before they were revealed. I realise that this story is a romance and not billed as a mystery. However, I prefer it when authors can surprise me.
I like my leading characters to be intelligent, resourceful and resilient. Unfortunately, at times neither of our protagonists displayed the level of intelligence that I’ve come to expect with Juliet’s writing. There were several frustrated eye rolls and big huffs at Grace and Hadrian’s thoughts, assumptions and actions. Especially while reading the last few chapters of the book. To be honest, I got a bit disheartened with both of them.
I really enjoyed this story and think that Sinless is a very easy book to read. It has everything that I look for in a good story. Intelligent writing style, well balanced action, humour and tense scenes. Plus oodles of romance and just enough erotic sex scenes to keep me pink cheeked.
I’d recommend Sinless to adult readers of contemporary romance or paranormal romance. Especially those who enjoy good writing and plot development, some action and tense, dramatic crime themes. Balanced with lovely humour, heart-warming romance and sexual titillation.
