Title: Slade by Teresa Gabelman
Series: The Protectors #6
Published by Self-Published on 28 December, 2014
Genres: Adult Paranormal Romance
Narrator: Jeffrey Kafer
Length: 7 hours 29 minutes
No. of Pages: 296
Highly trained VC Warrior, Dr. Slade Buchanan’s, role between lifesaver and lifetaker has been a constant battle, but nothing prepared him for half-breed VC Warrior trainee, Jill Nichols. Slade realizes his struggles from the past were nothing compared to the difficulty of resisting the woman who could never belong to a man like him.
Being the only female VC Warrior recruit, Jill Nichols, has an uphill battle. Falling for the sexy doctor, Slade Buchanan, has not made the battle any easier, especially when he constantly reminds her and others there will never be anything between them. Working harder than any male recruit, obstacles are thrown in her path, and with each challenge, it becomes clear that the two things she wants most may never be.

Each book in this fast-paced series usually focuses on the romance between one couple while the multiple story-lines continue in the background. However, in this book, the romance/relationship between Slade and Jill has been building since he joined the VC Warrior team in book 3, Duncan.
So, what did I like about Slade?
I am already a fan of Teresa Gabelman’s writing style; I find her books easy to read, her plots are gripping, the pace is fast but never feels rushed and I am drawn in with main characters and a fantastic array of supporting cast (both human and vampire) that are totally believable that leave me wanting to read more! Slade definitely lived up to my expectations.
I loved this story: it’s one of my favourites!
Jeffrey Kafer’s performance is once again amazing: he IS the voice of the VC Warriors. His performance embodies the strength, power and “alpha-ness” of the male characters. Although he doesn’t change his voice dramatically for each character (male or female) the subtle variations to pace and tone certainly transport me into each and every scene.
Jill Nichols is one of my favourite characters in this series.
Jill’s smart, witty and has plenty of gumption. I’ve been waiting for her book since she joined the series back in Jared (The Protectors #2). The Slade/Jill romance thing has been building since he was introduced in Duncan (The Protectors #3) and at I loved that we finally got to find out what Dr Slade Buchanan was really thinking behind that perpetual growl of his.
Those of you that have read my reviews before, will know that I enjoy a story more if the lead female character is intelligent, resilient and has a good sense of humour – well so far all of the women in this series have had me jumping for joy (even the villains!) I loved it that we got to know Caroline Fitzgerald a bit more and I’m looking forward to finding out more about new VC Warrior Jax Wheeler and the new vampire half-breed, Katarina.
Now, I must confess that the emotions that this book stirred in me were far-reaching.
I enjoyed the way that the tension was built throughout this book, loved the revelations, twists and turns and actually found myself nervous for the characters, not knowing what to expect next. The adrenaline was definitely pumping at times, and I thought that the action scenes were very well written.
I loved the humour in this book! I found it bloody hilarious at times; Steve is great as the comedy sidekick and the banter between all of the warriors is top notch. And yes, I also found myself blubbering like a baby once or twice.
Do I need to mention the sex? 😉
As with the other Protectors’ books, Ms Gabelman’s writes explicit sex scenes and turns them into very romantic ones. She still got me tingling in all the right places. *blush*
I loved all internal dialogue too. These insights into Slade and Jill’s state of mind, their doubts and emotional turmoil captivated my heart and put the romance into this paranormal romance book.
So, um, was there anything I disliked about it?
I absolutely loved everything about this book! (Hence the 5 stars.) 😉
I would just like to take this opportunity to mention that there are now lots of story threads running throughout The Protectors series. For example, the story arcs relating to the drug Crimson Rush, the human trafficking plotlines, the volatile prejudices that both humans and vampires have.
Ms Gabelman attempts to weave basic details into her books so that new readers are not completely lost. However, in all honesty, I don’t think that you can read Slade without having read the previous books first. Too much has happened and there are lots of characters to get your head around.
So, basically what I’m saying is…
I absolutely loved this exciting paranormal romance story; I couldn’t stop reading it! It’s got everything that I look for in a 5 star book; action, romance, humour, a gripping story-line and well written, erotic sex scenes.
This book has graphic violence and explicit sex as well as some darker themes. Therefore, I’d only recommend this book to adults who are OK reading material of this nature.
I’d recommend Slade to adults who love relationship and romance tales. Especially those with gritty story-lines and lots of hot, passion.
