Flora Reviews… The Demon of New York (The Demon Series #6) by Ayse Hafiza
Quote from The Demon of New York
““What are we going to do in New York?” asked Jassassah telepathically. Alexander put his hands on his knees and squinted his eyes shut, “Just like the man I was named after… I am going to conquer””.

So, what did I like about The Demon of New York?
I already like Ms Hafiza’s writing style; I enjoy how her tales make you look at the world with new eyes, re-evaluate your beliefs and entertain you all at the same time – I’ve compared her books to that of Aesop’s Fables in the past and I stand by my comparison. It’s quite a skill for an author to involve a reader in their characters’ tale in so few pages; The Demon of New York certainly keeps you engaged.
Seeing the world and humans through Jassassah the Demon’s eyes is both scary and sadly illuminating. This story had me gripped but not in the same way of the previous novellas; Ms Hafiza turned her keen eye to the evil that the white collar sector inflicts upon individuals and the world at large.
I have learned with this series, to abandon any pre-conceived ideas about where the story would take me; I really enjoyed the journey Ms Hafiza took us on in this novella, with the scattered gems of wisdom, the twists and the different characters – human and demon – that Jassassah meets while on assignment in New York. I loved the little glimmers of humour (even the dark humour) and the well written satire peppered within these pages.
So, um, was there anything I disliked about it?
There was nothing that niggled while reading this story, hence why I gave it 5 stars.
Having said that please be warned that there are a certain number of scenes in this book that some readers may find unpalatable. Ms Hafiza doesn’t shy away from difficult themes in this series; murder, child abuse, racism, sexual abuse, human trafficking, illegal organ harvesting, violence and brutality… however I feel that she tackles these subjects with engaging prose and sympathetic humour while drawing your focus on the social commentary aspect.
So, basically what I’m saying is…
I really enjoyed The Demon of New York. It’s another unique read that had everything that I look for in a 5 star book; intelligent writing style that’s easy to follow, a main character with depth of personality, a great supporting cast and a believable background story and setting (even when there’s magic and the supernatural involved).
I’d recommend this book to adults who enjoy paranormal fiction or urban fantasy adventures with some darker themes. The Demon Series has a unique perspective and is an unexpected find that I can’t recommend enough. The next and final novella in this series is The Demon of Alexandria and I can’t wait to find out what final mischief Jassassah stirs up in the ancient Egyptian city.
