Just because she can see the dead doesn’t mean Verity Long wants to spend her days hunting ghosts. Instead, she’s over the moon to land a marketing job at the local bank… until she finds her new boss dead in the vault. Even her ghost friend, Frankie, knows that's no way to start a career.

Relieved to let the police take charge, Verity steps aside, bound and determined to keep her ghost sightings to herself. But when she learns the main suspect in the murder is a very crooked, very dead mobster, Verity knows it's up to her to solve the case.

She teams up with her ghostly gangster buddy Frankie, as well as the irresistible and charming Ellis, as the three of them search haunted mob hideouts, hidden passageways, and historic cemeteries for the facts behind the heist of the century—and a modern-day motive for murder.

Too bad uncovering the truth could very well make Verity the next victim...

I bought The Haunted Heist for my Kindle at the beginning of the summer. Then added the narration because it was offered at a reduced rate. I alternated between reading the kindle version and listening to the narration. It’s the first time I’ve done that but it won’t be the last. 😉

What did I like about The Haunted Heist?

I love Angie Fox’s writing style and find her books very easy to read. I like the way she weaves all the elements of her stories together. The mystery, the strained relationship between Verity and the rest of the townsfolk of Sugarland and Verity’s financial struggles. Then, of course, she adds in the ghosts and their issues into the mix.

I loved that the characters, both living and dead, were complex and multi-dimensional. Each with their own stories, agendas and personalities.

As my regular followers will know, I prefer to read stories with intelligent, witty heroines. Women who have plenty of gumption and resilience. Protagonists who never give up. I’m full of admiration for Verity. She’s loyal and funny. However, I really love that, against the odds, Verity’s resilience shines through.

I wouldn’t put the Southern Ghost Hunter Mysteries series in the romance genre. However, I am enjoying how the relationship between Verity and Ellis continues to develop with each book. I’ve no doubt that their romance will not be an easy ride. However, I’m looking forward to seeing where Angie takes them.

I enjoy mystery stories but usually work out the ‘whodunit’ in cosy books before the big reveal.

However, I loved that this didn’t happen reading The Haunted Heist. There were plenty of twists, turns and red herrings to satisfy my inner Miss Marple. My little grey cells were kept busy reading this story. Kudos to Angie for keeping me guessing!

OK, for a cosy mystery this has some wonderfully tense moments. I actually found myself holding my breath in fear for a few pages too – scary!

I really loved everything about this story and as a narrated book, I was impressed with Tavia Gilbert’s performance; loving her tonal adjustments for the dialogue and the pace at which she read the story. I would definitely buy books narrated by her in the future.

Was there anything I disliked about it?

I loved every page, hence the 5 star rating.

Basically, what I’m saying is…

I really loved this book; it has everything that I look for in a 5-star story. The Haunted Heist gave me all the feels I crave. I laughed, cried, was on the edge of my seat (I was even a bit scared at times). Yes, I was gripped! Murder, mystery, humour and a cute romance what more could a girl want!

I’d recommend The Haunted Heist to anyone who enjoys ‘cosy mysteries’ with a paranormal focus. We get a sneaky teaser from book 3 – Deader Homes & Gardens – which is already on my Kindle waiting patiently. 😉

Southern Ghost Hunter Mysteries

The Southern Ghost Hunter Mysteries sits comfortably in the ‘cozy mystery’ genre. Although, some of the ghostly scenes feel less than cosy. 😉 This murder mystery series is set in modern America – Sugarland, Tennessee to be exact – and features the town’s residents, both living and deceased. Each book contains a new self-contained mystery for our heroine, Verity, to solve.
