The Haunted Heist (Southern Ghost Hunter Mysteries #3) by Angie Fox
Read: 16th – 17th August 2018
My Goodreads Rating: 5 Stars
I bought The Haunted Heist on Kindle at the beginning of the summer and added the audio version because it was offered at a reduced rate. I alternated between reading the kindle version and listening to the story on Audible which is the first time I have done this but it won’t be the last. As you can tell by my 5 star rating, I really loved everything about this story and as a narrated book, I was impressed with Tavia Gilbert’s performance; loving her tonal adjustments for the dialogue and the pace at which she read the story. I would definitely buy books narrated by her in the future.
…So what’s this book about?
The Haunted Heist is a paranormal novel (approximately 264 pages) that would sit well in the ‘cozy mystery’ genre and is the third book in Ms Fox’s Southern Ghost Hunter Mysteries series; currently 6 novels and 3 novellas. This murder mystery tale is set in modern America – Sugarland, Tennessee to be exact – and features the town’s residents, both living and deceased.
If you’ve read any of my reviews before, you’ll know, I don’t post spoilers or reveal plot twists in my book reviews, so here’s what the official blurb has to say about the story:
Just because she can see the dead doesn’t mean Verity Long wants to spend her days hunting ghosts. Instead, she’s over the moon to land a marketing job at the local bank… until she finds her new boss dead in the vault. Even her ghost friend, Frankie, knows that’s no way to start a career.
Relieved to let the police take charge, Verity steps aside, bound and determined to keep her ghost sightings to herself. But when she learns the main suspect in the murder is a very crooked, very dead mobster, Verity knows it’s up to her to solve the case.
She teams up with her ghostly gangster buddy Frankie, as well as the irresistible and charming Ellis, as the three of them search haunted mob hideouts, hidden passageways, and historic cemeteries for the facts behind the heist of the century—and a modern-day motive for murder.
Too bad uncovering the truth could very well make Verity the next victim…
…So, what did I like about it?
I love Angie Fox’s writing style; I find her books very easy to read and I like the way she weaves all the elements of her stories together; the mystery, the strained relationship between Verity and the rest of the townsfolk of Sugarland, Verity’s financial struggles and, of course, the ghosts and their issues. The Haunted Heist did not let me down.
I loved that the characters, both living and dead, were complex and multi-dimensional with their own stories, agendas and personalities. As my regular followers will know, I prefer to read stories with intelligent, witty heroines who have plenty of gumption and resilience and who never give up and so I find myself full of admiration for Verity; she’s loyal, funny and I love that, against the odds, she’s resilient enough to make the decision to give her romantic life a fair shot too.
I liked that there were plenty of twist, turns and red herrings to satisfy my inner Miss Marple and keep my little grey cells busy reading this story – I love it when authors can surprise me.
Although I wouldn’t class this as a romance novel, I enjoyed how the relationship between Verity and Ellis continues to develop throughout this book; the pace feels very natural and realistic. I have no doubt that their romance will not be an easy ride but I look forward to seeing where Ms Fox takes it in future books.
OK, for a cozy mystery this has some wonderfully tense moments and I think I actually held my breath for a few pages – scary! I would like to add that I usually work out the ‘who dun it’ aspect in cozy books before the big reveal at the end too but that wasn’t the case here and I loved that!
…So, ummm, was there anything I disliked about it?
I loved every page, hence the 5 star rating.
…So, basically what I’m saying is…
I really loved this book; it has everything that I look for in a 5 star story; I laughed, I cried, I was on the edge of my seat (I was even a bit scared at times), I was gripped! Murder, mystery, humour and a cute romance what more could a girl want!
I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys ‘cozy mysteries’ with a paranormal focus. We get a sneaky teaser from the next book in the series Deader Homes & Gardens; which is already on my Kindle waiting patiently.
