Flora’s Mini Book Reviews… Sweep of the Blade (Innkeeper Chronicles #4) by Ilona Andrews

Hello Avid Readers,

Last year, I decided that mini reviews were the way forward for this particular book blogger. 😉 This means that I only write full detailed reviews for the books I receive from authors, publishers and PR organisers. When I read a book that I’ve bought for myself, I share my thoughts within a paragraph or two that I publish on Amazon UK, Goodreads and here on my blog.

Today, I want to share my thoughts about …

Sweep of the Blade (Innkeeper Chronicles #4) by Ilona Andrews

Maud Demille is a daughter of Innkeepers—a special group who provide ‘lodging’ to other-planetary visitors—so she knows that a simple life isn’t in the cards. But even Maud could never have anticipated what Fate would throw at her.

Once a wife to a powerful vampire knight, Maud and her young daughter, Helen, were exiled with him for his treachery to the desolate, savage planet of Karhari. Karhari killed her husband, and Maud—completely abandoned by his family—has spent over a year avenging his debts. Rescued by her sister Dina, she’s sworn off all things vampire.

Except… In helping Dina save the world, she met Arland, the Marshal of House Krahr, one of the most powerful vampire houses. One thing led to another and he asked for her hand in marriage. She declined. Arland is not used to hearing the word ‘no;’ and try as she might, Maud can’t just walk away from Arland. It doesn’t help that being human is a lot harder for Maud than being a vampire.

To sort it all out, she accepts his invitation to visit his home planet. House Krahr is extremely influential and Maud knows that a woman—a human, with a very questionable past—who’s turned down a proposal from its most beloved son won’t get a warm reception. Maybe she’s not sure about marrying Arland, but House Krahr isn’t going to decide for her. Maud Demille has never run from a fight, and House Krahr will soon discover that there’s a lot more to Maud than they’re expecting.

Completely Addictive Story That Had Me Hooked!

I’m already a big fan of this urban fantasy series and love Ilona Andrew’s writing style. I love the complexities of their characters, the pace of their plots and the way they balance the different scenes – fighting, horror and brutal violence – with the humour, promise of love and uplifting hope in their stories.

I really enjoyed all the political posturing and manoeuvring, the tension and action and although initially surprised at the change of setting, I quickly found myself completely engaged; I was breathless for whole chapters, wondering what would happen next! The struggles, etiquette, mystery and wileyness of the plot kept both my little grey cells and emotions whirling. 😉 I loved how the relationships between Maud and her daughter Helen with the various characters in this story evolved and enjoyed the surprises along the way: I like it when unexpected things happen and an author can surprise me like this.

I downloaded the narration by Natalie Naudus and loved her performance; she’s a new-to-me narrator and I really liked the way she read the narrative, the tonal variations she used during the different scenes and the voices she gave the characters. Her narration transported me into the story and I wont hesitate to download stories narrated by her in the future.

My 5 star rating confirms that I love this latest instalment of the Innkeeper Chronicles and I couldn’t put this story down! 😉 I can’t wait to see where we’re taken in the next book, Sweep With Me due to be released on 14th January 2020.
