Great Vampire Paranormal Romance. It’s About To Get bitey!

My #Blogtober a.k.a. 🎃 31 Days of Halloween 🎃

Hello, my spooktacular lovelies. As an audiobook blogger who’s passionate about paranormal romance, cosy paranormal mystery and urban fantasy, most of my reviews fit perfectly with this time of year. However, I’ve joined in with #Blogtober this year which is a daily blogging challenge. This means that I’m trying to mix it up with some suitably Halloween-y book tags, memes and discussion posts too this month.

I haven’t ever tried to post every day before but I’ll do my best to keep it interesting.

Hello, my lovelies. Welcome to day 20 of 🎃 31 Days of Halloween 🎃 my version of #Blogtober. Today I decided to write a “Top 5” list type post. Therefore, keeping with the #Blogtober and Halloween theme, I’ve chosen to share some of my favourite vampire paranormal romance stories with you.

The Vampyre by John William Polidori (1819) is often cited as being the first complete vampire story published in the UK. Vampires have undergone many re-imaginings since then. Now, maybe it’s because I’m getting older (the big 5-0 is looming on the horizon) but I’m picky about what I like and don’t like in the paranormal romance (PNR) genre.

I get turned off by so many books in my most beloved genre because authors are doing the unthinkable.

There are too many heroines out there that are TSTL (Too Stupid To Live). Even worse, they don’t seem to care that they’re deliberately putting themselves or their mate in danger!

Too perfect: Too bitchy: Too combative: Too bland.

For a book to be one of my favourites, I have certain criteria:

💚A heroine doesn’t have to be supernatural in any way.

She can be mortal. A shy bookworm with no fighting skills or a battle-hardened warrior. She can be a kick-ass woman in her own right, capable of handling her own business thank you very much. She can be the immortal, bad-ass, dangerous one, having fallen in love with a human who’s all too mortal. I just don’t want her to be stupid. My heroine has to be intelligent, resilient, resourceful and have plenty of gumption! I like female leads with a good sense of humour, but it’s not a deal-breaker but I do need her to deserve the dangerous, world-weary hero who’d sacrifice everything for her.

💚A Hero can be as alpha as he wants.

He can curse until I blush on the bus, start fights and make crappy decisions to protect his mate and the people he cares about. He just can’t be an arsehole. I need him to deserve the heroine who’ll pick up a shield – that weighs twice as much as she does – just to protect him. Because that’s what being in love is all about.

💚A Happy Ever After is a MUST.

This is paranormal romance. HEA isn’t optional. It’s mandatory.

💚I have to feel something while reading.

If the story doesn’t engage my emotions, if I don’t close the book and occasionally wonder what happened to that particular couple, or be desperate to read the next book in the series, it didn’t make me feel enough. I want to blubber like a baby, growl like a caged tiger, grip the edge of the sofa and hold my breath in tension. I want the story to make me chuckle out loud – or at least smile occasionally – as well as make me tingle in all the right places.

OK, so without further ado, on to my Halloween Top 5: Great Vampire Paranormal Romance Stories.

If you click on the book cover, you’ll find my review, all the information about the author and the purchase links. All my links open in a new tab so that you don’t lose your place here.

Vampire For Christmas by Felicity Heaton

Book cover for Vampire For Christmas by Felicity Heaton

New York Times and USA Today Best-selling paranormal romance author Felicity Heaton presents Vampire for Christmas

It was one last mission.

Shannon, a demon hunter with the agency, is looking forward to leaving behind the small town and the vampire she’s been stuck with for the past two years. Things are getting complicated fast and she wants out. A fresh start, free of her vampire partner, awaits her if she can survive their final mission and the lonely Christmas holidays.

It was one last mission.

Rafe, a vampire doing time with the agency, watches it approach with dread weighing heavily in his stomach. Two years of working with Shannon has been difficult, especially since he started falling for her, but he doesn’t want their partnership to end. He has barely a few days to make her face her feelings and stop her from leaving, and he intends to do just that.

When a slimy demon threatens the season of peace and goodwill, it’s the chance Rafe has been waiting for and the moment Shannon secretly fears. Rafe’s determination to prise open her heart and her own resolve to keep it closed clash as violently as they do with the demon, and threatens to end as messily.

Can Rafe make Shannon see that his love for her is real and that she feels something for him too? Can Shannon face her fears and her past, and stop herself from running away from both? Will a wish on a star bring her what her heart truly desires—a vampire for Christmas?

I love this novella – it’s the perfect vampire paranormal romance! Vampire for Christmas is a heart-warming romance with a titillating passion that also had me holding my breath during some amazing fight scenes as well as chuckling at the humour and blubbering like a baby. As with all of Ms Heaton’s stories, due to the graphic violence and explicit sexual content, I’d recommend this book to adults who are not offended by content of this nature and are fans of relationship and romance stories with oodles of fire and passion within the paranormal genre.

I’m already a fan of Teresa’s writing style and love her books. She creates wonderfully complex characters (even in tales of this size – quite a skill) and builds worlds and situations that draw you in and become completely real. This novella did not disappoint me. Thankfully, Teresa has released a second novella in The Enforcer series! Woop!Woop!

Here Be Sexist Vampires by Suzanne Wright

book cover for Deep in Your Veins book 1 - Here Be Sexist Vampires by Suzanne Wright

Sam Parker is a vampire with a gift so strong and substantial that she is invited to partake in a test for a place in the Grand High Master Vampire’s private legion. She finds that not only has the army never included a woman, but it has never included a Sventé vampire – a breed that is regarded by the super-strong Pagori breed and the hypnotically beautiful Keja breed to be too tame and human-like. Most refuse to take her seriously, especially dangerous Pagori commander, Jared, who she craves in spite of herself. The Grand High Master, however, sees her potential and offers her the position of Jared’s co-commander to help train the newest squad in time for the impending attack on his island. Sam has to demonstrate to Jared and the squad of chauvinists why it is incredibly foolish to underestimate a wilful, temperamental, borderline-homicidal Sventé female.

Warning: This novel contains an iron-willed female vampire with an energy whip, a sexist male vampire who is determined to have her, explicit vampy sex, and a romance story with real bite.

I must confess that the title of this book put me off for ages! I was anxious whether I was going to like it, however, Here Be Sexist Vampires was a bloody good book. It kept me gripped from the first page to the last. Suzanne’s protagonists are AWESOME!

Now before I share my next vampire paranormal romance with you, I have a confession to make. The hero isn’t technically a vampire. Wait, wait, wait… He has vampire characteristics but they’re called Immortal Guardians in this author’s world.

Broken Dawn by Dianne Duvall

book cover for Broken Dawn (Immortal Guardians #10) by Dianne Duvall

Nick Belanger can’t stop thinking about the single mother who lives next door.

She’s smart. She’s funny. She’s so beautiful he can’t stare at her too long for fear his eyes will start to glow. But Kayla thinks he’s just an ordinary guy who works in security. Finding out he instead is a powerful immortal warrior who hunts and slays psychotic vampires for a living may not go over well, particularly since she has a daughter she doesn’t want to endanger.

Kayla Dorman can keep neither her gaze nor her thoughts from straying to the man next door.

Who can blame her really? He is the epitome of tall, dark, and handsome with smart, charming, and honorable thrown in. He’s also a few years younger than her and surely would not be interested in a single mom who hasn’t dated since her divorce. At least that’s what she thinks until an accident nearly takes her life and Nick risks all to save her.

The dynamics of their relationship swiftly change.

The friendship they’ve developed over the years deepens into love as the two spend every minute they can together, laughing and teasing, never suspecting a threat may lurk in the shadows. But that threat soon strikes, making it clear that Nick is the target and his enemy doesn’t care if Kayla gets caught in the crossfire. Though Kayla bravely rises to the occasion and is determined to do whatever it takes to help Nick defeat his enemy, Nick is terrified of losing her. Can he identify and eliminate his new nemesis before the man takes everything from him?

I’m already a big fan of Dianne Duvall’s books and have read all of them. Broken Dawn felt like a new beginning, although it’s book 10 in her Immortal Guardians series. Dianne drew me into this story from the start and I remained hooked throughout. I’ve already listened to it again and it was only released last year. What I love is the natural balance in Broken Dawn between the fighting and violent scenes and the humorous, romantic and passionate ones.

Dead To Begin With by Jennifer Blackstream

Book cover for Blood Prince 7 - Dead To Begin With by Jennifer Blackstream

The Vampire Prince of Dacia does not take the holiday off…

Kirill needs more gold to finance his newest attempt at an alliance. Unfortunately, the Christmas holiday looms before him–a time when production mysteriously falls. The only solution is to visit the mines himself, make certain the dwarves are mining as diligently as they can. The most illogical course of action in the world would be to…give them the day off.

A Christmas miracle…

Irina does not take no for an answer–certainly not from her husband. She has big plans for a Christmas dinner with their friends, and Kirill will be there whether he likes it or not. Still, though she can make sure his body is there, Irina knows forcing his heart to be in it is not so simple. But how do you get a vampire into the Christmas spirit?

Three ghosts…

The ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future are not ones to shy away from a challenge. They can take any form they like, show any creature the error of their ways. If they have to work through the day instead of in the dark of night, then so be it. And who cares if this particular soul in need of saving just so happens to be…Dead to Begin With?

I originally read this novella last year for #Blogmas. I loved it! I’m a big fan of the way Jennifer Blackstream takes traditional folk/fairy tales and makes them her own. I loved the way she set Dickens’ classic A Christmas Carol in her Blood Prince world and added her own sparkle of magic. Dead To Begin With is part of the completed Blood Prince series. However, I think it can be read as a standalone “retelling” of A Christmas Carol. It’s a fun, quick read for anyone looking for a festive novella about mending your ways before it’s too late. I know I’ll be reading it again this Christmas.

I totally agree with Dianne Duvall and her Immortal Guardians. So good! Have you tried Dannika Dark’s Cross Breed books? A half vampire and a full vampire romance with lots of danger as well. All of her books/series are 5 star for me. Plus all her books takes place in her breed world. All different kinds of paranormal characters.
