Mini-Review: Of Swine and Roses by Ilona Andrews @ilona_andrews

Hello, fellow bookworms. Today, I’m sharing my thoughts about Of Swine and Roses by Ilona Andrews. A wonderful young adult short story that can be read as a standalone.

I actually read this short story back in 2015. It was the first thing that I read by Ilona Andrews. I only wrote a few lines but the story stayed with me for years. I think it’s about time it was on my book blog.

A young adult short story about a girl, a pig, some magic, and the worst date ever.

Chad Thurman is a thug, who carries brass knuckles in both pockets and lays magic traps for intruders into “his” neighborhood. The last thing Alena Kornov wants to do is to go on the date with him. But when her family pressures her, she can’t say no.
Now the ice-cream is absent, the pig is running for its life, and we won’t even mention the dead guy…

Loved this short story!!

It’s quite a talent to get the reader emotionally involved in the characters and believe in a world in so few pages. I was completely drawn in. I’ll definitely be looking out for more stories by this author.

About Ilona Andrews

Author image for Ilona Andrews

Ilona Andrews is the pseudonym for a husband-and-wife writing team. Ilona is a native-born Russian and Gordon is a former communications sergeant in the U.S. Army. Contrary to popular belief, Gordon was never an intelligence officer with a license to kill, and Ilona was never the mysterious Russian spy who seduced him. They met in college, in English Composition 101, where Ilona got a better grade. (Gordon is still sore about that.)

Gordon and Ilona currently reside in Oregon with their two children, three dogs and a cat. They have co-authored several series, including the #1 NYT bestselling urban fantasy of Kate Daniels, rustic fantasy of the Edge, paranormal romance of Hidden Legacy, and Innkeeper Chronicles.

Thank you for taking the time to read this: I really appreciate it. Have you read Of Swine and Roses? I’d love to hear what you thought about it.

About Me

I'm in my late forties, my interests are varied but since menopause hit a few years ago, I find myself becoming a "grumpy old woman" all too frequently - where has my infinite patience gone!?! Lol!
I bought a Kindle in the summer of 2013 and haven't stopped reading since. If you want to know more about me, check out my blog -

  1. Great review – I’m not often a fan of short stories but it sounds like this is well worth trying. I have heard great things about the author, so this would be a good way to try her out!
