Flora Reviews… Bitten by a Hellcat (Eternal Mates #6) by Felicity Heaton
Read: 1st – 4th March 2015
Re-Read: 7th – 15th December 2017
My Goodreads Rating: 5 Stars
So what’s this book about?
Bitten by a Hellcat is the sixth paranormal romance novel (approx 114 pages) in this series. This story is about a human hunter and extremely rare shapeshifters, hellcats. Ms Heaton has populated her world with a huge variety of species, including witches, demons and other shifters.
I focus my reviews on how the story was told rather than the plot itself. I’m looking at the author’s writing style, how they paced their plots and how well they constructed their characters and setting. Therefore, my reviews don’t contain spoilers or reveal plot twists.
Here’s what the official blurb has to say about the story.
The sole remaining member of the most famous shifter hunter family in history, Owen Nightingale is a mercenary and a man with a secret held in his closely guarded heart, but when a beautiful rare shifter catches his eye and offers him a job, he has the feeling he’ll be the one paying for helping her—with his heart.
Cait is in a spot of trouble with a capital T. A male hellcat has set his sights on claiming her and she’s one kitty who doesn’t want a collar. When she meets a dark, alluring and mysterious hunter, she sees a chance to rid herself of the male, but the price Owen sets and the fierce passion that burns white-hot between them lures her dangerously under his seductive spell.
Can Owen discover the true intent of the male hellcat and stop Cait from falling into his hands? And can Cait retain control as the heat of desire burns between her and Owen, or will a reckless moment seal both of their fates forever?
The Eternal Mates world is the same as Ms Heaton’s London Vampires series. There’ll be 15 books in the Eternal Mates series by the end of 2017. However, you don’t need to read any of the previous books in either series to enjoy Bitten by a Hellcat. The romance aspect in this tale is concluded by the end of the book in Ms Heaton’s signature Happy Ever After style, so no nasty cliffhangers. Woohoo!
So, what did I like about it?
I am already a huge fan of Ms Heaton’s writing style (have I said that before? lol!); it’s the way she creates a very believable paranormal world and then fills it with complex, multifaceted characters and then weaves their stories with such depth that it just draws me in. Bitten by a Hellcat is no exception.
Our storyline runs slightly differently from previous Eternal Mates books; the male is human for a start but Owen Nightingale is a fearsome hunter for hire with a few tricks up his sleeve that make it very hard for our heroine, Cait a rare Hellcat shifter, to resist.
Now, be prepared dear reader, Cait and Owen get down and dirty straight way rather than “fighting the urge to be Fated Mates” as our previous couples have done but as I’ve said before, one of the reasons why I love Ms Heaton’s books is how she makes the most explicit sexual scenes very romantic (I think that it takes a very talented writer to accomplish this), the erotic interludes are balanced with beautifully written imagery and poignant internal dialogue from Cait and Owen; the tender insights into their inner fears and emotional confusion throughout this book was heart-warming to read.
Ms Heaton gives all her characters such depth that they become real; I not only enjoyed the cameos during the Underworld scene but I liked meeting some new characters, I hope we see more of Julianna, Taryn, Alice and Niko in future books.
…So, ummm, was there anything I disliked about it?
Back in 2015, the only reason that I didn’t give this story a 5 star rating was because I felt it rushed over situations too quickly at times and I would have liked a bit more backstory/action, e.g. a few more pages around the auction, but I think that maybe I just didn’t want the story to end, so hence the amended 5 stars. Lol!
…So, basically what I’m saying is…
I loved this story! It’s got everything that I’m looking for in a 5 star book. I shed a tear or two during the tender/sad scenes, I was titillated during the sex scenes and I was on the edge of my seat reading the fighting and action scenes, in short, I was gripped and couldn’t stop reading!
There are scenes of explicit sexual content and graphic violence in this book. Therefore, I’d only recommend it to adults who aren’t offended by scenes of this sort.
I’d recommend Bitten by a Hellcat to adults who are fans of relationship and romance stories. Especially if you love them with oodles of fire and passion. It’s definitely an 18+ rated story.
