Flora Reviews… Love Immortal by Felicity Heaton. A standalone Vampire Romance Novel

Read: 20th – 28th May 2018

Format: Kindle

My Goodreads Rating: 4 Stars

So what’s this book about?

Love Immortal is a standalone paranormal romance story (approx 350 pages) set in our modern times across various European cities. This epic adventure draws its origins from the Greek Myths and features many supernatural species including; vampires, werewolves, demons, Greek Deities as well as humans with paranormal abilities.

I focus my reviews on how the story was told rather than the plot itself. I’m looking at the author’s writing style, how they paced their plots and how well they constructed their characters and setting. Therefore, my reviews don’t contain spoilers or reveal plot twists.

Here’s what the official blurb has to say about the story.

Rescued from werewolves by the most breathtaking man she’s ever seen, Lauren is dragged into the fight of her life and a dark world she never knew existed. There, she discovers that she’s the latest reincarnation of a goddess and must drink the blood of her immortal protector, Julian, in order to reawaken and continue her three thousand year old mission to defeat Lycaon, the original werewolf.

With the help of Julian and an organisation of people with supernatural abilities, Lauren fights for her life, their future and the fate of mankind against Lycaon and his deadly army, but can she succeed when Lycaon has killed all of her predecessors?

Can she crack the armour around Julian’s heart and seize her happily forever after with him? And can Julian bring himself to trust Lauren with the fragments of his heart after everything he’s been through.

So, what did I like about it?

Felicity Heaton is one of my favourite authors. I love her writing style and find her stories very easy to read. Always becoming transported into the paranormal world she creates. Whilst enjoying the twists and turns she weaves into her plots. I love that her characters, both the heroes and the villains, are complex, multifaceted souls never just good or evil.

The first chapter has such engaging prose that it plummets you into a nightmare situation filled with action and I definitely felt my adrenaline pumping – what a rush! We also meet our heroine, Lauren, and her rescuer but are left with thousands of questions, which in my mind is a great start for a story. We don’t have to wait for long until hero, Julian, explains some of the back-story of the predicament that Lauren has found herself in, although some truths he keeps close to his chest and only gradually reveals them as their adventure continues.

I liked Lauren’s fighting spirit and Julian’s overwhelming protective nature and enjoyed hearing the inner dialogue of both of them. I loved how the sexual anticipation was built between them and yet still so very romantic despite the explicit writing. Ms Heaton at her best. I love that it’s not just Julian and Lauren that have depth of personality and intriguing back stories. All of the characters Ms Heaton introduced into this story are complex, multifaceted and completely believable. Partly due to their very real human virtues and foibles even though most of them are mythical, paranormal beings.

I also enjoy how Ms Heaton crafts some rather beautiful interweaving stories into her books featuring the secondary and supporting characters; I hope to read a novella or two about Ghost’s missions in the future, Ms Heaton. *hint*hint*

There are quite a few fantastic battle scenes throughout this tale; I was on the edge of my seat holding my breath during every one! The great descriptive writing put me right in the midst of it all without slowing down the action. And while we’re on the subject of action, I’ve need to mention the sex. While Love Immortal doesn’t have as many sex scenes as some of Ms Heaton’s other novels, it’s still beautifully erotic. Ms Heaton makes the most explicit sexual scenes very romantic. I think she’s a very talented writer to accomplish this. However, these erotic acts are balanced nicely with wonderfully written descriptions and the characters’ internal dialogue. For me, a story is only really erotic if I’m emotionally connected to the characters involved. Ms Heaton gave Julian and Lauren such depth, they did became real. Therefore, yes, I got caught up with the naughty shenanigans too (who wouldn’t *blush*).

Love Immortal is a heart-warming romance with titillating passion. It also shocked me into silence, surprised me with unexpected twists, had me holding my breath during some amazing fight scenes and had me blubbering like a baby.

So, ummm, was there anything I disliked about it?

OK, so here’s when I have to be completely honest and tell you why my rating was 4 stars rather than 5.

I did really enjoy reading Love Immortal. However, at times, I felt that Julian’s lengthy and repetitive inner dialogue slowed the pace rather that shedding light on a different part of his history, issue/worry or facet of his personality. It began to frustrate me that we (the reader) didn’t know some of the feelings that Julian was hiding from Lauren or the reasons for his behaviour.

So, basically what I’m saying is…

I really enjoyed this paranormal romance story! It’s got everything that I’m looking for in a great book; action, romance, adventure, humour and passion!

Content Warning:

There are scenes of explicit sexual content and graphic violence in this book. Therefore, I’d only recommend it to adults who aren’t offended by scenes of this sort.

I’d recommend Love Immortal to fans of relationship and romance adventure stories with oodles of fire and passion.
