Magic Unleashed (Venators #1) by Devri Walls
Six years ago, Grey Malteer was attacked by creatures he thought couldn’t possibly exist. They repeated a word, calling him a name he’d never heard before…Venator. Since then, his life has been a hellhole of secrecy—hiding old pain alongside strange new abilities.
Rune Jenkins has an itch, as she calls it, but it’s more than that. It’s an anger that builds up like the inside of a boiler whenever she’s around anything remotely supernatural. The pressure is growing steadily worse and she can’t understand why. All she knows is—her control is slipping.
By order of an unknown council Grey and Rune are pulled through a portal in the St. Louis arch, landing them in an alternate dimension where creatures of myth and legend exist. A realm that calls them, Venators.
Made up of centuries old fae, vampires, werewolves, elves and succubi the council’s corrupt nature becomes obvious as they seek to wield the newly returned Venators as weapons. Wedged in an impossible position, Grey and Rune must decide their fate—do they go against the council’s wishes and help the innocents of this unforgiving land, or face the possibility of execution by the council.
Promises Forged (Venators #2) by Devri Walls
It has been mere days in the world of Eon, where Rune Jenkins, her twin brother Ryker, and their friend Grey have been trapped, fighting for their lives. After discovering the truth of their ancestry, the three are far from home, and far from anything resembling their mundane lives of the past.
While Ryker is still held captive by the eerily beautiful Zio and her goblins, Grey falls into the clutches of Feena, the Fae queen. She begins to drain his soul bit by bit to feed her dark underground garden, and Grey has no hope of escaping on his own.
It is now up to Rune to save Grey, as his precious time slips away inexorably. But the Council has denied her permission to embark on a rescue mission, until she can harness her Venator gifts and prove herself capable of venturing into the Fae queen’s territory. As Rune discovers that promises in Eon are forged with life-or-death consequences, she realizes that she must act quickly, or else be swallowed and Grey along with her by the dangers of Eon.

Quote from Magic Unleashed by Devri Walls
“Grey breathed in the smell of books, old and new. It smelled like knowledge … and security. Books didn’t expect you to answer back. And they didn’t laugh when your response was socially unacceptable. They were perfect.”
My Overall Rating: 3/5
Plot: 4/5 – Flow: 3/5 – Character Development: 3/5 – World Building: 4/5
Magic Unleashed is the first novel (approx. 378 pages) in a new fantasy series – Venators . This series would sit happily on a Young Adult (YA) or New Adult (NA) shelf. Venators follows a number of main characters including three young college students – twins Rune and Ryker Jenkins and Grey Malteer. They’re thrown into a new world called Eon, where every imaginable supernatural and mythical being is real: Shapeshifters, vampires, werewolves, elves, succubae, incubi, goblins, sorcerers and even dragons!
I write about how the story was told rather than the plot itself. Consequently, my reviews don’t contain spoilers or reveal plot twists.
I don’t usually read Young Adult (YA) books or stories about college students but agreed to read Magic Unleashed for a number of reasons; the front cover caught my eye – you’ve got to agree, it screams “powerful female” and the story description piqued my interest – a world where all manner of supernatural creatures live, descendants of genetically altered humans, political intrigue, untapped magical powers, yes please and of course I love finding new authors.
Devri Wells is a new-to-me author, but I’m really impressed with her writing style; the descriptive prose she uses throughout, how she sets up the scenes, the fact that she shows us rather than tells us her characters’ personality traits and how realistic her characters seem to be – even the supernatural ones!
Devri managed to grab my attention in the very first chapter; introducing one of our main characters, Tate, and the dangers that inhabit this fantasy world that Devri’s created. I was intrigued by the various groups that we met along the way, the differences between the species and their outlooks on life and the political structure of Eon and the resulting hierarchy of power.
As the first book in a new series, there’s a lot of information about the world of Eon that our protagonist are thrown into and we’re introduced to a whole host of characters, many of whom keep their true loyalties and motivations very close to their chests. I loved that and enjoyed trying to get to know Tate, Verida, Beltran and the council’s duplicitous members.
Magic Unleashed was good and I enjoyed reading it. However, I’d just like to mention why I wasn’t more invested in the story.
My reading preferences, while not set in stone, are habitual. I have certain requirements regarding plot, writing style and character traits that dictate how engaged I become and how much I enjoy a book.
Unfortunately, there were too many stereotypical YA/college tropes and personality traits. My eyes kept rolling and I huffed in frustration throughout this book. Ryker – the stereotypical bully and oblivious to anyone but himself. Rune – another stereotype – a beauty who has an inner struggle with the responsibility of her reputation. Grey – stereotypical abused boy obsessed with the paranormal. I found Rune’s personality, her thoughts and actions, way too frustrating. Although I came to like and admire Grey it wasn’t enough to change my mind about this book. It’s too YA for my tastes.
This is a good YA fantasy story. It’s got some wonderful world building, amazing characters, action-packed fight-for-your-life adventures and to
Due to the brutality and violence – both inferred and realised – I’d recommend this book to readers who aren’t offended by content of this nature. There are also many sexual scenes and although there’s no actual intercourse it’s definitely very steamy at times.
I’d recommend Magic Unleashed to readers who enjoy fantasy adventures. Tales set against a dark, scary world but within the paranormal Young Adult or New Adult genre.

Devri Walls is an international best selling author. She lives in Meridian, Idaho with her husband, two children and one adorable little mutt. Writing in all things fantasy, she would do just about anything for a working magic wand.
Mostly because she’s a walking disaster and a wand would be of enormous help…although she’d probably trip and break it. So, there’s that.
She graduated with a degree in theater and has studied vocal performance most of her life. She now teaches voice lessons when she’s not writing novels, cooking dinner, playing taxi, spending time with her amazingly supportive husband or trying to read.
