Quote from Marek (Waving my nerd flag with this one!)
“Marek lifted the cool glass of juice to his lips and took a sip as his gaze scanned the screen of the laptop opened in from on him. He swept his right index finger over the touchpad, scrolling through the document. It had taken him months to transcribe every hand-written report he had stored in the basement of his villa, centuries of documents filed by his brothers, detailing every daemon they had come across and any unusual gate activity they had noticed.”
What’s Marek about?
Marek is the fourth novel (approx. 466 pages) in Felicity Heaton’s paranormal romance series, Guardians Of Hades.
This series is about the sons of Hades and Persephone. The Greek God of the Underworld and his with the Goddess of vegetation and spring. Ares, Valen, Daimon, Esher, Keras, Calistos and Marek are Princes of the Underworld and Lords of a specific element. Each son has must guard one of the seven gates to the Underworld. The gates are located in cities here on Earth: New York, London, Paris, Tokyo, Hong Kong, and two in Seville. The daemons want to use the gates to cause an apocalypse foretold by the Greek fates, the Moirai.
I focus my reviews on how the story was told rather than the plot itself. I’m looking at the author’s writing style, how they paced their plots and how well they constructed their characters and setting. Therefore, my reviews don’t contain spoilers or reveal plot twists.
Here’s what the official blurb has to say about the story.
Prince of the Underworld and Lord of Earth, Marek was banished from his home by his father, Hades, two centuries ago and given a new duty and purpose—to keep our world and his from colliding in a calamity foreseen by the Moirai. Together with his six brothers, he fights to defend the gates to the Underworld from daemons bent on breaching them and gaining entrance to that forbidden land, striving to protect his home from their dark influence.
Haunted by a betrayal that shattered him and set him on a dark path of vengeance, Marek closely guards his heart, as determined to keep it safe as he is to wipe the scourge of vampires from the world.
Until a hunt lands him in the presence of a beautiful woman who threatens to steal that heart as she battles his sworn enemy, her graceful moves igniting a passion so fierce and hunger so deep it consumes him.
Caterina’s sole purpose for the last decade has been freeing her brother of the curse of being turned into a vampire. When an alluring dark warrior steps in to help her battle a nest of bloodsuckers, her entire life is tipped off balance. She knows deep in her heart the warrior can help her save her brother, but can she trust a man who is driven to slay every vampire he meets?
When Marek’s enemy emerges from the shadows, and Caterina is pulled down a dark rabbit hole into a dangerous world, will they be strong enough to overcome their pride and their prejudices or will a dark turn of events shatter both their hearts?
I was given an unedited digital version of this book (eARC) for free from the author in exchange for an honest review. This does not influence or affect this review. This is my candid opinion about the writing style and story.
What did I like about Marek?
I’m already a big fan of Felicity Heaton’s other series and love her writing style! Her world building is amazing. It’s her mix of fantasy and reality that captures my attention right from the start. I love her characters. They’re never black or white, good or evil but a complex mix of positive and negative traits and emotions. It’s this mix and attention to detail that always makes her stories feel more realistic for me.
Marek did not disappoint was worth the wait!
Right from the start, the nerd in me loved when Marek or Keras talked about research or ‘hitting the books’. This is what drew me to the brothers in the first place. 😉 I loved getting under Marek’s skin and being in his head. Caterina is exactly what I want from a main female character. She’s resilient, intelligent, loyal and can hold her own in a fight. I think that she’s a fabulous addition to the female mates!
Let’s talk about sex!
I need to confess that one of the reasons why I love Felicity’s books so much is the sex. She makes the most explicit sexual scenes very romantic. I think that it takes a very talented writer to accomplish this. The erotic scenes balance beautifully with poignant internal dialogue and heartfelt revelations from Marek and Caterina.
I loved the passionate love scenes. Held my breath during the edge-of-your-seat fight scenes. Tears trickled down my cheeks during the tender and sadder scenes, and I chuckled at the humour and banter. This story had me hooked from the first page to the last!
Was there anything I disliked about it?
I absolutely loved everything about this book! (Hence the 5 stars.)
Felicity loves a happy ever after ending for her romantic couples in all her books. So there’s a satisfactory conclusion to the romance between Marek and Caterina by the end of the book. However, the main underlying story for the whole series is left unresolved. Who is the unknown mastermind behind all the threats? However, there’s no life or death cliffhanger at the end of this book. Woohoo!
Felicity tries to ensure that new readers or existing forgetful ones aren’t confused or lost reading Marek. Vital information from previous books is weaved seamlessly into this story. However, you’d miss many of the little details jumping straight in or reading these books out of order. For example, you’d miss the nuances of experiencing past relationships, plot lines and knowing the characters – good and evil.
Basically, what I’m saying is…
I really loved this paranormal romance story.
I read Greek myths when I was younger and love that they’re the inspiration for this series. With Felicity’s usual twist, of course.
I think Marek is a great read. It made me smile, cry and feel all hot and bothered. I loved the well-written erotic thrills, kick arse fighting and the romantic gestures sprinkles through this book. It ticked all the boxes keeping me engaged from the start.
There are scenes of explicit sexual content and graphic violence in this book. Therefore, I’d only recommend it to adults who aren’t offended by scenes of this sort.
Who would I recommend this book to?
Readers who enjoy stories with a “caught between a rock and a hard place” element. Those who want characters with inner strength and exploring the lengths we go for our siblings or those we love. Above all, readers who adore tales about soul saving love with oodles of fire and passion.
