Hello Avid Readers. Today, I’m sharing my thoughts about The Darkest Passion by Gena Showalter. Book 5 in her bestselling paranormal romance series, Lords of the Underworld.
Last year, I came to the decision that mini reviews are the way forward for this book blogger. 😉
For the last few years, I’ve just been writing a paragraph or two for Amazon and Goodreads – especially when it’s a book with thousands of reviews already – but as I want to build up my blog to be THE place to go for paranormal romance fans, I’ve been moving those old reviews here too.
I started reading Gena Showalter’s Lords of the Underworld series back in 2017 and picked up the series again this year. Today, I’d like to share my thoughts about about…
The Darkest Passion (Lords of the Underworld #5) by Gena Showalter
Aeron – Immortal Keeper of Wrath
His anger is his power For weeks, the immortal warrior Aeron has sensed an invisible female presence. An angel – demon assassin – has been sent to kill him. Or has she? Olivia claims she fell from the heavens, giving up immortality because she couldn’t bear to harm him.
But trusting Olivia will endanger them all. How has this “mortal” with the huge blue eyes already unleashed Aeron’s darkest passion? Now, with an enemy hot on his trail and his faithful demon companion determined to remove Olivia from his life, Aeron is trapped between duty and consuming desire.
Worse still, a new executioner has been sent to do the job Olivia wouldn’t…
A Story That Invoked Many of My Emotions.
I love Gena Showalter’s writing style; the prose she uses, the pace of her plots, the twists and turns she takes us on and how she concludes the main romantic aspect and imminent threats while still leaving some tantalising threads that lure you to keep reading the series.
I really liked how this book contained more than just the romance between Aeron and Olivia; there’s the background story arc surrounding the Lords’ arch enemy Galen and his Hunters as well as other threads about different Lords (no spoilers here). Every aspect of this story is there for a reason and propels the series forward.
I ended up really enjoying The Darkest Passion, hence the 4 stars. However, it was a 3 star read for me for a large proportion of time. Here’s why.
When reading paranormal romance, I need the female protagonist to be intelligent, resilient, resourceful, self-reliant and have plenty of gumption. Sadly, throughout most of this story, there were a many aspects of Olivia’s personality that irritated me. As an angel, she was a beautiful soul, empathetic and loving. However becoming human brought out idiosyncrasies that plagued me. Selfishness, aggression and she became a bully. These traits drove me to actually hate her. In my mind, she didn’t deserve Aeron for most of the book. However, I’m glad that I persevered.
Aeron was a male that ticked all my boxes and I already had a soft spot for him from the previous books. He was alpha, loyal, had depth and deserved someone to love him. I love tortured, cursed heroes. 💚
There are scenes of explicit sexual content and graphic violence in this book. Therefore, I’d only recommend it to adults who aren’t offended by scenes of this sort.
I‘d recommend this book to adults who enjoy romance stories. Tales about the complexities of relationships, trust, loyalty and betrayal. And of course, challenging insurmountable odds and soul saving love.
I’m definitely engaged in the Lords of the Underworld series. I have already bought the next book in this series and can’t wait to read more.
