Quote from Unbroken

It’s amazing to meet someone, fall in love and plan to spend the rest of your life with them, but what happens when they are ripped away from you and it feels as though your soul has been shredded.

heading so what's this book about?

Unbroken is the fourth and final book in Victoria’s Rune Witch Mysteries  series. A cross between urban fantasy and cozy paranormal mystery blending our modern ideas about witchcraft and magic with Welsh mythology. Unbroken is a story (approx 133 pages) set in modern day Wales, UK. Our protagonists are rune witch, Summer Daniels, and long-time boyfriend now fiancé, Thomas Heart. Thomas is human and a master in the martial art of Krav Magna. This series is filled with a host of supernatural beings including house fairies, goblins, dragons and witches.

I focus my reviews on how the story was told rather than the plot itself. I’m looking at the author’s writing style, how they paced their plots and how well they constructed their characters and setting. Therefore, my reviews don’t contain spoilers or reveal plot twists.

Here’s what the official blurb has to say about the story.

The Tylwyth Teg took someone from me. I want him back.

When Thomas was taken from me, I wanted to burn the world. To rip it from its orbit and send it crashing into the sun. I’d been broken. But no more.

I’m Summer Daniels. Friend to few. Foe to many. And one angry witch…

… I’m coming for what is mine.

header so what did I like about it?

I’m already fan of Victoria DeLuis books. I find her writing style very easy to read and I love the way she crafts her stories. I like the pace and intelligence of her plots, how she evolves her characters and how the various relationships develop – friend and foe.

The urban fantasy world that she created in this series ignited my imagination. Obviously drawing on the wealth of Welsh folklore that’s right on her doorstep. It’s a wonderful mix of fantasy and reality.

The previous book – Forgotten – ended on a cliffhanger. Thomas had been taken! Oh how I’d cried! This first chapter starts where Forgotten left off, with Summer Daniels searching for a way to save Thomas.

Summer and Thomas are still very much in love. Their companionship, the banter they share and their loyalty to each other was wonderful to read and added a further dimension to the series. I’ve enjoyed that the series began with their long-term relationship already solid and just waiting to take that next step into that permanent commitment – marriage. It’s a unique situation in the stories I read and it’s one of the aspects of the Rune Witch Mysteries that kept drawing me back.

As with the previous books, I felt MANY emotions. I held my breath during the fight scenes. My intellect enjoyed the twists and turns of the plot. I cried, felt fear and tension. But I also smiled and laughed out loud at some perfectly timed banter.

header title for Reviews - So ummm was there anything I disliked about it

I gave Unbroken 5 stars because I enjoyed every single page – even the ones that made me cry. 😉

Unbroken can’t be read as a standalone story as it’s the completion of the series. Victoria includes the basic information about the existing characters and previous adventures. However, I don’t think that new readers can just jump in. The series has been building to this final showdown between Summer and Dureth. You’d miss all the nuances that come with knowing the characters and understanding the dynamics of the relationships. Plus you’d miss the small clues of connectivity that have been gleamed from the past adventures if you just jump in cold.

heading title for Reviews - So basically what I'm saying is

I really loved the Rune Witch Mysteries series and Unbroken was the perfect way to end it. It had mystery, action, magic, humour and romance.

There’s no explicit or graphic violent or sexual scenes in Unbroken. Therefore I feel comfortable recommending it to anyone who likes reading paranormal mysteries.

Read this series if you love a mystery to solve, enjoy fantasy, adventure themes and don’t mind a bit of romance thrown in.
