If you like Kresley Cole's Immortals After Dark, Sherrilyn Kenyon's Dark-Hunters and Larissa Ione's Demonica world, you won't be able to put down the addictive Eternal Mates series of fated mate romances packed with dark elves, vampires, shifters, demons, angels, witches and fae in a huge detailed world that will leave you breathless!

Even for one of the top assassins in Hell like him, Hartt’s latest contract would have been difficult enough, but there’s a complication—a beautiful, flame-haired, and dangerously tempting complication. Not only is the bewitching female a distraction he doesn’t need—she’s the competition.

Mackenzie’s life hasn’t been easy. Held captive by blood mages who murdered her family, forced to spend every day guarding her secret, and now she lands the biggest contract ever—one that would set her assassin’s guild up as one of the best in Hell—and it turns out her client hasn’t only hired her. He’s hired the top guild in Hell too. Worse, the male she’s up against is wickedly alluring, a dark elf warrior who sets her blood on fire, and the heat that sparks between them is in danger of burning her resolve to take him down to ashes.

It’s a race against time and each other to fulfil the contract by taking out one of the most dangerous men in Hell, a vampire with a name befitting of his bloody history, but who will be the one to claim victory—one of them or the King of Death?

Scorched by Darkness is an adult paranormal romance novel in Felicity’s Eternal Mates series. The series is set in the same world as her London Vampires series. However, you don’t have to have read either to enjoy Scorched by Darkness.

What did I think?

I’m already a BIG fan of Felicity’s writing style. I think I’ve mentioned this once or twice on the blog. 😉 It’s the way she creates a very believable paranormal world then fills it with an array of interesting characters. These characters are written with very real human foibles which brings them to life and makes them believable. THEN Felicity weaves their stories around a gripping plot that just draws me in. Scorched by Darkness did not disappoint.

I really liked that this paranormal romance wasn’t easy sailing for either of our characters.

Hartt and Mackenzie both have plenty of baggage! We’d met Hartt before as part of other stories in previous books. As the head of the best assassins’ guild, I’d always felt drawn to find out more about him. Hartt’s lethal, accomplished and has a controlled facade but always puts his friends and guild brothers before himself. I knew there was more to him than meets the eye – how right I was!

Mackenzie is a worthy female protagonist to add to this series.

I enjoy a story more when the lead female character is intelligent, resilient and can look after herself. I wasn’t disappointed here. Mackenzie can hold her own in a fight, shes resourceful and has a great sense of humour. She showed her true strength throughout this story by learning from her mistakes and growing as a guild leader. I really enjoyed learning about her life and getting to know her. Hopefully she’ll pop up in future books.

Fantastic sexual chemistry and tension.

Felicity writes explicit sexual scenes with oodles of love which makes them feel very romantic. I think that it takes a very talented writer to accomplish this. The erotic interludes are balanced beautifully with heartfelt, poignant internal dialogue from our main romantic pair. The tender insights into Hartt and Mackenzie’s inner fears, their doubts and the emotional turmoil throughout this book, captivated my heart.

The plot had me caught between a rock and a hard place.

As the blurb confirms, both Hartt and Mackenzie have been hired to assassinate the same target – the King of Death. Grave Van der Garde is one of my biggest book-boyfriends. I was devastated! Felicity couldn’t let either of them actually kill him?! Could she? Would she? I devoured page after page in a panicked hysteria.

Felicity weaves any relevant information into this story. Therefore, you don’t need to read any of the previous books in either the Eternal Mates series or London Vampires series to enjoy this one. However, I would like to say that as with most books within a well-established series, reading Scorched by Darkness as a standalone story means that you might lack that deeper connection to the supporting characters. I promise you Grave deserves to live!

There was so much about this story I loved.

The romantic gestures and the passion between Mackenzie and Hartt, the edge-of-your-seat fight scenes, the tender/emotional scenes and the sprinkling of humour. I was captivated from the first page to the last and couldn’t stop reading! Plus, as with all of the books in this series, the romance aspect between Makenzie and Hartt is concluded by the end of the book in Felicity’s signature Happy Ever After style. No nasty cliffhangers wondering will they, won’t they. Woop! Woop!

Content Warning:

There are scenes of explicit sexual content and graphic violence in this book. Therefore, I’d only recommend it to adults who aren’t offended by scenes of this sort.

I’d recommend Scorched by Darkness to adults who love reading relationship and romance tales with oodles of fire and passion.
