Semi-Psychic Life (Glimmer Lake #2) by Elizabeth Hunter – Review #PWF

Today, I’m sharing my thoughts about Semi-Psychic Life by Elizabeth Hunter. Book 2 in her paranormal series, Glimmer Lake.

Last year, I decided that mini-reviews were the way forward for this particular book blogger. 😉  This means that I only write full detailed reviews for the ARCs I receive.

Who says you can’t live the rock and roll life after forty? You just need a lot more vitamins and a bigger bottle of aspirin.

Valerie Costa was pretty sure she was rocking her forties. She had an amazing coffee shop, two cool teenagers, and a new superpower that gave her insight into any random object she touched.

Okay, she wasn’t thrilled about that last one.

Ever since Val and her two best friends had driven their car off the edge and into Glimmer Lake the year before, Val has struggled with her new abilities. She’s not exactly sure she wants to be psychic, she could live without her newfound glove addiction, and honestly no one wants to know that much about their teenage sons.

But when Val’s ex-husband goes missing, and police show up at her door with questions she can’t answer, Val, Robin, and Monica are going to have to use their sudden psychic abilities to solve a mystery none of them saw coming.

Semi-Psychic Life is a standalone paranormal women’s fiction novel in the Glimmer Lake series by USA Today bestseller, Elizabeth Hunter, author of the Elemental Mysteries and the Irin Chronicles.

Semi-Psychic Life is also another book in a new reading genre that I wrote about back in April – Paranormal Women’s Fiction or PWF for short.

13 paranormal romanceurban fantasy and paranormal cozy mystery authors have teamed up to write books where the female protagonists are +40s. As a menopausal woman within spitting distance of the big 5-0, I’m overjoyed at this new genre. I can’t wait to buy them all!

What did I think about it?

A Captivating Mystery That Had Me Hooked!

I’m already a fan of Elizabeth Hunter’s books and love her writing style. Her stories tick all the boxes for me. An intelligent writing style that’s easy to read, main characters with personality traits that don’t frustrate me, depth of character in the supporting cast, believable background story and setting – even when based in the paranormal – and a balanced mix of relationship, tension, action, humour and mystery in the plotline.

As a menopausal woman myself, I love that this series has older protagonists and supporting characters. About bloody time! Woohoo!

This is the first time I’ve heard a book narrated by Ava Lucas. I thought her performance was really good. She conveyed the appropriate emotions when reading the different scenes and I liked the pace that she read at too. Ava has a number of convincing accents and voices in her repertoire. It was clear during the many conversations who was saying what.

Semi-Psychic Life is the second book in the Glimmer Lake series.

However, I think it can work as a standalone title too. I’d recommend Semi-Psychic Life to readers who enjoy stories about the fine line between being self-reliant and asking for help. The value of strong, healthy friendships in our lives and not being afraid of opening your heart.

Semi-Psychic Life is a sort of second coming-of-age story for older, independent, capable women with a generous helping of banter, humour and realistic issues for the over 40s within a paranormal mystery.

Keep reading to find out more about this series and its author.
