Rule one: Don't look at the demon.

When I arrived at my uncle's house, I expected my relatives to be like me - outcast sorcerers who don't practice magic. I was right about the sorcery, but wrong about everything else.

Rule two: Don't listen to the demon.

My uncle chose a far deadlier power. He calls creatures of darkness into our world, binds them into service contracts, and sells them to the highest bidder. And I'm supposed to act like I don't know how illegal and dangerous it is.

Rule three: Don't talk to the demon.

All I had to do was keep my nose out of it. Pretend I didn't find the summoning circle in the basement. Pretend I didn't notice the shadowy being trapped inside it. Pretend I didn't break the rules. But I did, and now it's too late.

Make sure to check out the companion series, The Guild Codex: Spellbound, available now, and The Guild Codex: Warped, co-authored by Rob Jacobsen.

🔎 A Tapestry Of Mysteries That Kept Me Listening. 🔍

Annette Marie has become a tried and trusted author with her interlinking Guild Codex series. Annette’s writing style is polished, intelligent and easy to sink into. I’m captivated by her world of Mythics, demons, magic, danger and secrecy. The characters that Annette has created for this world are diverse with multiple layers just waiting for us to delve into.

Taming Demons for Beginners is the first story in the series, The Guild Codex: Demonized or book #5 in the whole Guild Codex Universe depending on how you decide to play it.

However, you can start listening to it without worrying about spoilers or needing to know stuff from The Guild Codex: Spellbound books. Annette weaves any vital info into this story. Having said that, I really think you should get them all! 😘

Taming Demons for Beginners had all the elements that I look for in a gripping story.

It has a great plot, with plenty of action and conflict, but with enough humour to keep me engaged. Robin is a young woman who has been kept away from the practical side of being a Mythic by her parents. She’s a self-confessed book nerd and exhibited many of the personality traits that I love. Robin is resilient and has a wonderful sense of humour. The many exchanges between her and Zylas had me smiling on numerous toccasions. There are HUGE gaps in Robin’s knowledge and her ignorance and naivete frustrated the hell out of me at times but I love that she’s seeking to rectify that – and quickly. Fantastic! I’m looking forward to seeing her grow and mature into the kick-arse heroine I know she can become.

Cris Dukehart’s performance was fantastic.

I liked the pace at which Cris read the story and her slight tonal adjustment during the different emotional scenes. She gave each character a slightly different voice meaning that I wasn’t confused about who was speaking. Cris also seemed to captured Robin’s timid personality, her fear and frustrations shone through.

Annette doesn’t leave us with nasty cliffhangers. Woop!

Don’t get me wrong, there are still plenty of mysteries left to unravel. But, Robin isn’t left hanging dangerously in a life-or-death situation. We’ve met some new characters who I’m looking forward to getting to know as well as seen cameos from some favourites from the Mythic world. I’m keen to find out how the events in this story will affect things in the linked series and what Robin and her demon will do next.

I’d recommend Taming Demons for Beginners to fans of mystery stories. Especially those who enjoy urban fantasy settings.

Keep reading to find out more about Annette Marie, but first, let me tell you what this series is about.

The Guild Codex: Demonized by Annette Marie

Meet Robin Page: outcast sorceress, mythic history buff, unapologetic bookworm, and the last person you’d expect to command the rarest demon in the long history of summoning. Though she holds his leash, this demon can’t be controlled . . . but can he be tamed?

Don’t look at the demon . . . don’t talk to the demon . . . don’t touch the demon . . .

The Guild Codex Universe includes four series: Spellbound, Demonized, Warped, and Veiled for a total of 16+ books and 3 bonus stories. They can be read in publication order, chronological order, as individual series, or in Annette’s recommended order.

About Annette Marie

Annette Marie Author Photo

Annette Marie is the author of YA urban fantasy series Steel & Stone, its prequel trilogy Spell Weaver, romantic fantasy trilogy Red Winter, and sassy UF series The Guild Codex.

Her first love is fantasy, but fast-paced adventures and tantalizing forbidden romances are her guilty pleasures. She proudly admits she has a thing for dragons, and her editor has politely inquired as to whether she intends to include them in every book.

Annette lives in the frozen winter wasteland of Alberta, Canada (okay, it’s not quite that bad). She shares her life with her husband and their furry minion of darkness—sorry, cat—Caesar.

When not writing, she can be found elbow-deep in one art project or another while blissfully ignoring all adult responsibilities.

And because this is a review about an audiobook, here’s the bio and links for Cris too.

  1. I love Annette Marie’s books. I LOVE the Guild Codex series… All of them. Robin and Zylas are *chefs kiss*. My all time love is Ezra (with Tori). Kit and Lienna are awesome. I adore Zakky boy… And Saber will grow on me I’m sure. So much love for all of it and the narrator of the audios gets a lot of love from people… I really need to give them a re-listen on audio instead of re-reading them all the time. 😉

  2. Terrific review. I like how you ensure us that we can read this without reading the The Guild Codex: Spellbound books series first
